Why I am unwilling to accept it is when I was there on May 10th taking all the pictures I wanted along with everyone else, I am not someone who would ignore the signs or rules. I can say that I did not see any signs or guards or our guide did not say not to take pictures. I just can't understand how this would happen, as I am a person who always follows the rules. I must have been so jet lagged that I totally did not see these signs that everone says were there. I am sure everyone is reporting what they saw, but I am just angry with myself if I did this when it was not permitted. Thanks all for your input, Buck

And Buck- don't mind the "High Priestesses of Pedanticism and Pomposity" that you contiually encounter on this website. They are self-appointed "enforcers" legends only in their own minds. In the Real World, welllll, not so much, methinks! (and by no means should I give short shrift to those High PRIESTS of Pomposity as well!) (smile)

Hey Margate-I'm back, taking a break from the war.....the war on the big T, to be more precise.....

hey, hey ,hey... look what Buck said: "How could flash hurt David when he was outside for 400 years and survived that." It's a joke. He's trying to pretend that he thinks the OUTSIDE statue is the real thing.

Actually, the original statue WAS in the Plazza Signoria for about 400 years, it was only moved to the Accedemia in the late 19th century. That's when the copy which now stand in the Plazza Signoria was made.

Saw David May 25th and there were employees enforcing the No Photos rule. My cousin snuck a photo. I'll have to see if it came out. It was tempting, but I didn't take one. Took a few back in 1990. David did look fabulous all cleaned up!

Hi Buck - I can understand your confusion since you've gotten answers that range from "do whatever" to "get arrested." I've read and heard that photos are no longer allowed, but when I took mine in 1994 there were no signs and no problems. Flash is not a issue because David can be photographed very well without a flash if you have an adjustable camera. I've even taken good museum photos with a point and shoot w/o flash. Museums are trying to encourage people to buy prints of their works of art, but if all I want is a print, I can pick one up here in the States. Our photographs are memories of our visits. When I look at my David photos, I am again in that hall, my head tilted back, my eyes and mouth open in wonder. A telephoto lens revealed the intensity and determination in his gaze "up close and personal." It WAS personal - a connection between me and Michaelangelo. The museum can keep their prints.

HI
I'll treasure the photos I took a few years ago, used a simple point and shoot camera, no flash, no reprimand, and amazingly no other people in the photo. But a good clear postcard or art book can do just as well.

Cicerone was correct, David was outside for a few centuries, now the one in the plaza is the copy. You could always take a picture of that one.

Now you can see what I mean, the response by (Janegg) to what I said about David being outside for 400 years, shows she knows absolutely nothing about David and his history, but trying to give advice and answer questions. You go figure, Buck

buck, if you look at the first post you made asking this question, you will find joelleinitaly answered it fairly soon, with a specific date in May, which is what you asked for. She repeated the information on this post as well.

"We were there Sunday, May 23, 2004 and there were signs CLEARLY saying NO PHOTOS. A few people got out their cameras and guards were there pretty quickly asking them not to take photos. So, no it is not allowed."

So if people got annoyed with you, it is because you did not seem to be reading the answers to your own question. Most questions on here get a lot of opinions and thoughts and attempts to be helpful, and somewhere in there is usually some real information.

Airlawgirl, I don't understand your remarks. Buck was angry that people were annoyed with him. I was just trying to explain why, as he didn't seem to understand.

I'd sincerely like to know why you consider that "pompous" or "self-important" on my part. You can email me directly if you'd like to take this off the board.

"Take it off the board..." sheesh! Give it a rest, will you? Now, let's see: Pomposity and Self-Importance: Quote attributable to Marilyn FREUD last Sunday a.m. in response to Airlawgirl's post "What is UP with Fodor's Deletions? re the fodorlittleminds (of which you are very much a co-conspirator) deletion of "What Do The British Really Think?"

Quote: "YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS, UNDERSTAND? YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS!!

Huh? That makes no sense whatsoever to me.

It's true that none of us has any rights in regard to this board. It's fodors' board. And I actually agreed with you in that I didn't see any reason why that post should have been deleted either, but what does that have to do with trying to clarify the buck situation?

(That is my real name, but there is an "n" in it. I'm not related to Sigmund. I know you would want to get it right, Airlawgirl.)

Marilyn, I am afraid that somehow , some of us have irritated poor OT or Airlawgirl or whomeever this poor angry person is. She is all over the boards, (smiling) and complaining and insulting.
Maybe Fodors will notice her before long.

Buck, seems to me you're actually trying to stir it up a bit. You obviously didn't READ the posts to you including the one from Joelle who answered your question not once but twice. Now you're splitting hairs about how long David was outside, and fretting over whether or not you were allowed photos that you have ALREADY taken.

I was there in '96, '98, '99, and '00 and I have photos from all of those trips. Apparently something has changed about their policies. Now that I know they're no longer allowed, I'm pretty darned happy I have them. Like a previous poster, the photo takes me back to that first time in florence when I came upon the David and waited my turn in the crowds to stand in front of him.

So cherish the photos you have and give it a rest!

Here's another idea: Perhaps you ought to send an apology card to the Accademia, explain your situation to them, send them a small fee for your transgression, and mail the negatives back with a promise you'll never ever do it again! It's the honest thing to do...
