If flying from Dulles to LHR on United, BMI makes better sense than BA as I believe they are codeshare and arrive/depart from same terminal at LHR. Also OP mentioned spending time in Edinburgh.

Flying to Aberdeen and touring the NE 'Castle Trail' makes little sense for you. You want to get out west to Mull so going to NE Scotland is in the wrong direction.

For Edinburgh, St Andrews and Mull -- fly into EDI and out of GLA..

One thing I meant to mention earlier -- the days will be very long. At the end of July sunset will be around 9:30PM so you can be out and about in daylight til after 10PM. The 'sites' close, but the 'sights' don't. Places like Edinburgh/St Andrews/Kilchurn castles will close around 6PM - but the beaches and waterfalls and scenery will be there to enjoy for hours longer

So if we flew from Glasgow to Heathrow in the morning on British Airways (which I understand is a different terminal then United) and then my dad flew home in the afternoon on United, how much time should we allow between the two flights? Is 2 hours enough or would you suggest more? Do you think we would be able to check his luggage through to Washington-Dulles? Thanks!

I am also leaning towards using the pre-booked car service to Kings Cross and taking the train to York (staying 2 nights) and then taking the train to Edinburgh (where we will pick up a car when ready to leave). I was looking into rail passes and it appears to me (if I am understanding it and doing the math correctly) that we can buy a Party Pass (3 day consecutive BritRail) for only a little bit more then the 2 point-to-point advance fare passes. And this would give us the flexibility in case something happens with our flight. Can any of you confirm? Thanks again! My math says about $45 more total for all 4 for the Party Pass as opposed to the point-to-point total (3 adults + 1 ten-year old)

Any thoughts on the amount of time needed between BA flight from Glasgow to Heathrow and United flight from Heathrow to Washington-Dulles?
Thank you.
