Switzerland: Wengen hotels - anything to add to this list?
Hello! I've been researching hotels in Wengen, and have dutifully looked through old posts here. Below is everything I've compiled on the various recommendations.
From what I've gathered, the Caprice, Silberhorn, and Alpenrose are among the favorites. However, I'm worried that these fabulous hotels may be a bit pricey for my budget. Is that true (are they for higher-end budgets), or do I have a misperception (and perhaps a miscalculation in my head, doing the CHF to $ conversion)? The latter is possible, as I'm still learning what things cost in Switzerland in general.
Anyway, what I'm wondering really is about the OTHER hotels. Anyone have comments on "DO NOT go to ___ hotel." Or "From what I can tell, ___ hotel probably doesn't have good views." Or "___ hotel has horrible food." Things that will help guide me through the long list of hotels that are not quite as fabulous as the Caprice, Alpenrose, and Silberhorn! Comments on views, atmosphere, food, hosts, room size and comfort, convenience of location, etc, are all appreciated.
Of course, any comments anyone has to add (or corrections on the below) are welcome. Where I've included a previous comment, I've put the poster's name in parentheses, e.g. (suspire), so if someone wants to search out that person's posts, they can. I hope that's not out of line.

4 stars. This hotel is a bit cheaper than the Caprice but still a very lovely hotel in terms of decor and service. It is set back from the town area which is nice (but the whole town is quiet so noise is not an issue). I (Cicerone) also included it because it has an indoor pool, which is I think it is the only hotel with a pool in Wengen.
I (Cicerone) have eaten at the Beausite and looked at several of the rooms. I took notes on some particular room numbers and can look them I if you want (am in an airport lounge today). The hotel is indeed beautifully sited, it is set a bit back from the main town of Wengen and commands good views of the mountains and the little town. It is below the cable lines for the Mannlinchlen lift. It is a very nice 4 start hotel, also has an indoor pool and small wellness centre which is a nice plus. Decor is nice, I saw 4-5 rooms and they all appear to have been redone in the last year or two and were in good shape. It would be very quiet at night well away from the tourist crowds during the day, and a pleasant walk of about 10 minutes into the village. This is a good choice in Wengen, IMO. Food is good.
It sounds nice. The Beausite said they will also have a new outdoor pool by next summer (2006)
We (Claudia) recently stayed at the Beausite Park Hotel in Wengen. It's a little way out of the town but that's all relative - an 8 minute walk from the train station but well worth it. We paid about $150 for a beautiful modern apartment with half board.

4-5 stars. Lovely views, good restaurant, nice rooms, excellent hotel staff. This is one of my (Cicerone’s) favourite hotels in Europe. It is not overly luxurious, but extremely comfortable and welcoming, small and charming.
The Caprice is my (Cicerone’s) personal favourite for charm and their great staff, but with kids the Beausite Park may be better as it has an indoor pool, which is always a plus for kids for kids.
We (LLindaC) stayed at the Caprice in Wengen last year and absolutely loved it. It was easy to get to other places from there.
My husband and I (erwench) also stayed at the Caprice in Wengen last May and really enjoyed our stay. They brought a plate of delicious chocolates to our room as a welcome gift. The owners were very helpful with all of our questions. The view from our balcony was incredible.
In Wengen, I (Cicerone) generally stay at the Caprice and generally do get half board because their restaurant is excellent, as is the hotel.
We (LLindaC) also stayed at the Caprice with stunning views and great food/service.
I (Cicerone) am a huge fan of the Caprice for the rooms, food and ambience and also for their really excellent service. YOu also get views over and down into the valley including the waterfall at Lauterbrunnen, you would not get this from the Beausite as is it too far back from the edge of the shelf on which the town sits.

3 star. This is a nice 3 star hotel, a few steps from the train station. Great views. If you are considering this hotel, let me (Cicerone) know, as I can recommend specific rooms/wings in the hotel, some are better than others.
The best rooms are the south facing rooms, the rooms without a view are called "standard" rooms but are the same size. They have two wings, one they call "rustic" and the other they call the "Laura Ashley" wing. I (Cicerone) preferred the latter, as they have redone the bathrooms and the rooms are done in a light fresh style as opposed to the bit more dated pine rooms in the rustic wing. Of the south facing rooms, I would ask for 202, 404 or 405. 202 has a large concrete terrace which is shares with (I believe) 203 and 204.
We (Schnauzer) stayed at the Silberhorn, all be it 13 years ago. We stayed in a large room off a tower - if that makes any sense. Very friendly family atmosphere back then but obviously nothing up to date. We found the location to be excellent, right near the base of the ski fields, so no great hike to start the day.

comments: I (georgine) would highly recommend the Sunstar Hotel in Wengen for a family with children. It is a four star property on the main street that has a huge, indoor pool which is glass enclosed on two sides----the views out over the snow covered mountain peaks are breathtaking. The hotel offers suites and maisonettes for families. Also, the chain has a stateside representative (Nancy), who was most helpful in answering questions and giving "firsthand advice" when we were planning our holiday in Wengen. Toll free at (1-800-222-1140) The hotel is less than a block from the cable car, and about 2 blocks from the train station. (They would be arriving from Lauterbrunnen.) The hotel sends a small, motorized vehicle to pick up arriving guests at the Wengen train station.

The Regina is another really really nice choice, and the only reason I'm (swandav2000) not wild about it is that they have a disco, I think, and I worry that it would be noisy.

3 star. I (Cicerone) have not stayed here, but it looks very charming, and gets good reviews on this site and tripadvisor.com
I (swandav2000) enjoyed the Alpenrose in Wengen when I stayed there a few years ago. Prices are around 130-180 per person, but that includes half board.
It's truly lovely, comfortable, and has great food and views. I (teacherlady) would stay there again in a heartbeat.
While the Alpenrose is indeed special, it is a special three-star hotel and not in the same league as the Caprice. I (swandav2000) stayed at the Alpenrose about 10 years ago but have not been back, for various reasons.
The Alperose is also nice, but not quite the view...(that the Belvedere has)
I (swandav2000) stayed at the Alpenrose in Wengen in March, 1995, and really liked the views and the ambiance of the decor. I haven't been back to the hotel because I thought the host & hostess were *too* nice -- I like to be left alone when I travel! They had a free wine-social hour on Friday night so all the guests could mingle, and they seated me at dinner next to another single traveller.
I (Judi) also love the Alpenrose in Wengen. It is a bit of a walk from the train station but they do have an electric cart to take you to and from the train station. We had half board and the four nights we were there we were served great meals. The staff was very nice; the owners came out to bid us goodbye when we left. I would stay there again if I ever get back to Wengen.
Another vote for the Alpenrose!!!! We (slbuz) were just there in July (2004) and loved this hotel! Ask for a view room and you will look out over the valley and see Murren in the distance! The food was fabulous!

comments: (612boudou) Just spent two nights at the Hirschen...balcony. Nice room for two people. Shower and comode are pretty tight, but we were not there for the facilities. Easy walk from the train station. nice breakfast in the morning. Not very crowded in the town so the restaurant was not open in the evening. Very nice owner... We had no reservations so we just wandered in and were set up immediately...I believe we paid 130 swiss francs per night...

I'm pretty sure the Regina didn't have a disco when I went! It was very sedate and full of middle aged American couples. Not noisy at all. Nice cat. Food was amazing and the views of pink full moon rising over the mountain unforgettable.

Anyone have any feedback on the other hotels on this list? I'm aprticularly interested in hearing about the Alpenruhe, Bären, and Edelweiss.
I know many of you love the Alpenrose and the Caprice, but we prefer something smaller and more rustic (chalet-style), as long as we can still have a balcony.

Enzian - Hotel Bellevue might be what you're looking for -
We've stayed at the Hotel Bellevue twice in the past and would stay there again. A few more comments taken from my trip reports regarding this hotel:
From our firist visit -
We stayed at the Hotel Bellevue (***), which is located on a quiet hillside overlooking Wengen. The hotel is located about 5-7 minutes by foot from the Wengen train station. We called the hotel when we arrived and the owner came down personally in his electric car to collect our luggage.
The Hotel Bellevue is a small, moderately priced hotel run by Judith and Andreas Engi-Graf, who are fluent in German, French and English. The hotel was perfect for the two of us, and we would highly recommend it for couples and families alike.
The hotel’s dining room, patio and various lounges all provide great views of the Jungfrau and the Lauterbrunnen valley. We requested a south facing room and we had a spectacular view from our balcony.
The Hotel Bellevue is comfortable, incredibly peaceful and well run. The meals are really good and the staff is very accommodating.
From our second visit -
This was our second stay in the hotel, and once again, we weren’t disappointed. We had reserved room #208, the corner unit on the non-smoking floor. Our room had a huge, two-sided balcony with a spectacular view of the Jungfrau from the bed.
Just a word about Hotel Brunner - we stayed there on our first visit to Wengen and we didn't care for it. Granted, it's been several years, but I remember thinking it felt like someone's grandmother's house - a hodgepodge of worn furniture in the lounge, small spartan rooms, a shortage of mismatched towels - in a word, dowdy.

Thank, Melng8! I'll check out Hotel Bellevue as well. I don't know how I missed it when I was searching.
A non-smoking room in a chalet-style place with lots of light pine is what we like. Hoepfully with flower boxes on the balconies. And none of the "grandmother's house" feel that you describe at Brunner.

Do not stay at the Regina - it is a dump.
I have been to Wengen four times for extended visits, and absolutely love this village. I have two first choices: the Alpenrose and the Berghaus. Each is a little out of the way, which is good for quiet and enjoyment of natural beauty. Some of the others are on the main drag and a little too busy for me. The Alpenrose is a steep walk down from the train station; the Berghaus is about a 5-10 minute walk in the opposite direction from the train station, and feels a little less claustrophobic in setting.
Berghaus is less pricey, somewhat minimalist, but has outstanding views of the Jungfrau (specify a room with a view out toward it). They also have an excellent kitchen - trout is a specialty. Alpenrose has a warm ambience and feels more like a ski lodge. You can't go wrong with either one.

Thank you! I did look at the Alpenrose and Berghouse. Alpenrose is lovely but just a bit fancy for us--I can't imagine walking through the reception area in my hiking clothes. But perhaps I should reconsider.

I should add---this is our fourth trip to Switzerland, but first time in Wengen. I was going to stay in Grindelwald for the hikes that I love there (Faulhorn, Eiger Nordwand), but we'd rather be up higher in a car-free village, and we can still get to the hikes with a bit of train and cable-car help.
I'm curious about the Gartenbahn at the Bellevue. A miniature railway?

I've spent holidays in Grindelwald, too. Wengen is better-situated for hikes, because you can go in one direction toward the Grindelwald hikes and you can go in the other direction for the Muerren hikes, and you've got all the others in-between!
By the way, you would not be out of place walking into the Alpenrose in hiking clothes... It is a hiking culture!

I did send in an inquiry to Hotel Bellevue. It looks perfect in terms of the style, ambiance, and views. They don't mention anything other than single and double rooms, but they will put a "Zusatzbett" in a double room for a third person. Perhaps this would be best in one of the corner rooms? Are they larger?

Bellevue has no rooms available. I will try the Alpenrose, after being reassured we're OK there in our hiking clothes (we'll dress better for dinner, of course).
I have also had a positive response from the Alpenruhe, but would love some personal recommendations. Has anyone here stayed there? Thanks.

you can absolutely walk through the Alpenrose in your hiking clothes!!!! Don't have to get fancy for dinner either!! (obviously nicer than hiking clothes for dinner, but...) We were there with three teens and found it a very cozy and comfortable place.
After dinner, we always enjoyed sitting on the terrace overlooking the incredible views for a family card game, then going next door to see the sheep. I also enjoyed taking part of the route to the Staubacchkli (sp?) after dinner, as you can access it just from behind the inn, going behind the other buildings to meet up with the wanderweg. This met out with a slightly different, but just as beautiful view to see in the waning day light.
The Alpenrose, with its quiet setting and its rustic pine decor, offers the perfect Alpine retreat, IMO.

Hi kopp---welcome home! Yes, we're changing from Grindelwald to Wengen, since everyone seems to love it there, and it's someplce new to us.
No word from the Alpenrose yet, but Hotel Bären offered us rooms. It sounds wonderful on Tripadvisor---has anyone here stayed there or dined there? They seem to be known for their fresh and "trendy" (their word, not mine) cuisine.

Think you're going to love Wengen! It's been a while, but it's our favorite place in Switzerland (maybe anywhere). We liked the Hotel Eiger, don't know if it fits your needs, but we can recommend it.

Hi Paul---yes, Wengen seems to be everyone's favorite. I don't know why we have overlooked it. We generally stay in Mürren, but this trip we'll do both.
I did check the Eiger. It looks great, but they are fully booked for our dates, according to the website. I have e-mailed an owner of one of the top-floor apartments to see if it might be available.
