Switzerland Summer Weather

I am planning to travel sometime between June and August next year to the Bernese Oberland region for hiking and viewing the beautiful scenery. Obviously, I want the best opportunity for sunny weather. Which month would you recommend?

These last two years, we have "enjoyed" awful June (rainy and cold), miserable first two weeks of July (rainy and warmish), then 3-4 weeks of glorious weather (with some thunderstorms), and back to rainy but still warm end of August and September. Specialists of the Bernese Oberland will tell you about the local variations.

I know it's not supposed to be the MOST scenic place in Switzerland, but the Upper Engadin area (St. Moritz) is supposed to be the 'sunniest' place because of how the area sits in the mountains. I have stayed in Pontresina, (don't stay in St. Moritz) the first week in July, and the weather was great. The sun is very strong!! Pontresina is pretty little walkable village with lots of hiking an biking trails. I've also heard Sils Maria is quite nice, and that is in the same general area, but on the other side of St Moritz. St Moritz seemed overpriced and pretentious. PS Beginning of July was the week before High season, so rates were still reasonable, and not a lot of crowds!

Joanne: lucky you!
My sister stayed in Celerina, close to Pontresina, 3rd and 4th week of July. During the 3rd, they were freezing, during the 4th it was nice and sunny weather.
The Engadin is indeed one of the sunniest spot in Switzerland

Lee:
I find the weather here more and more unpredictable and agree with Florence. It's either very nice and almost too hot or pretty bad. Not much in-between.
I would choose choose July or August.
However, next year, things might be different again.

Generally speaking, one shouldn't generalize about weather in the Oberland!

But as a rule, the sunniest time is from mid-June to mid-August. Often good weather from April onwards, and well into October. But the odds are much more in your favor over that roughly 60 day stretch.

Note that one of the joys of the mountains are the wildflowers. While you'll see some at any time within, and even somewhat outside, that period, generally a greater profusion from late June or early July until late July and early August.

We were in Murren for 4 days in the middle of July this year, and it rained and was cold for 3 of those days. Luckily, we had one day of very beautiful, sunny (about 70F) weather. We actually had to buy sweatshirts because our long-sleeve shirts were not warm enough, and the heat was turned on in our chalet! We were told by the owner that the weather can be unpredictable (the week before it was in the 80s)!
