Switzerland : best 4 places and travel information
Hi,
I'm planning to visit Switzerland in Feb end. I need suggestions on the below:
-Is Feb-March good time to visit?
-If i want to visit Interlaken, Bern, Zurich, Appenzell and do skiing may be at Swiss Alps, where should i start from and plan my route? I need to book return tickets accordingly so need to know the last destination.
-I have heard it is an expensive place, how would you suggest me to save costs?
-Best mode of travel for these places?
-Any other suggestions on must visit places?
Thank you

You don't need to book Swiss trains in advance.
You may have a look at

I suppose you know what you want to see and to do at the 4 very different places you mentioned. Among all them, only Interlaken is close to ski areas. The cheapest skipass there will cost 60 EUR per day. A standard fare railway ticket from Interlaken to the lifts and back costs 20 EUR
Will you bring your own ski equipment? If not you will have to rent everything and that will not be cheap.

If going to 4 different places by train check out the Swiss Pass that would cover also city transports and gives free entry to hundreds of museums and attractions like those in Bern and Zurich you may visit- great info on Swiss trains and passes - www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
As for air tickets - for those places fly into Zurich and out of Zurich - close to all places you are looking at. With a Swiss Pass just hop on trains, buses, trams - no need to go to ticket windows.

If planning on spending a few days in Zurich you may want to also do Lucerne, one of the loveliest towns in Europe- on a lovely fjord-like Alpine lake - an easy day trip or base to substitute for Zurich - a big city that leaves many rather cold - it is a neat city IME if you ferret out its pluses but overall not nearly as romantic as say Lucerne.

Nam, do try cheese fondue in Switzerland and choclates, excellent. Also you might mix up a mountain village with a city stay, such as Zurich. Yes it is expensive. Maybe someone can suggest a bed and breakfast type stay. Also as far as a village, I would suggest Murren, but others can comment on the weather at the end of February in Murren, which undoubtedly is very cold/snowy, but a charming village. A guidebook is essential, and need to consider your interests. We reserved a very inexpensive cabin large room, but in the Summer over the Internet in Murren and it worked out very well, not so sure about the Winter months. Sue

Zurich and Bern are good for about one day for most folks IMO - just walking around is the thing to do plus museums if into those. Bern has the Bear Pits that is an icon of the city.
Interlaken has little itself to see but is a base for going into the high Alps - take the train to Grindelwald, about 25 minutes from Interlaken and be eyeball to eyeball with soaring peaks- try to stay there too to fully experience the rugged scenery from your hotel.
From Grindelwald a myriad of mountain trains and aerial cableways go off in all directions.
