Switzerland/Austria/Germany Trip Planning

I'm planning a 14-day trip by car in late September, probably landing in Zurich. I would like to spend time in Salzburg (2 nights), Munich (2 nights),and Berner Oberland region (4-5 nights). I have been to all of these places before (and several more than once) but I want to revisit them to see and do new things.

However, I want to include some new places to my itinerary but I don't want to make it too ambitious. Some possibilities I am considering are Geneva or Vevey, Montreux, Cochem, Varenna or Locarno (been there many years ago but really like the area), Baden Baden, and Zermatt.

I would appreciate any suggestions you have for my itinerary.

From the BO, I would suggest a drive or train ride to Lausanne (much to see there), and then on the way back see Vevey and then Montreux and Castle Chillon. Bern and Murten can also be easily done as a worthwhile day trip. If you are flying back from Zurich, I would suggest spending your last day in Luzern instead of Zurich, and it is only an hour or so from the Zurich airport. Varenna and Locarno are a long way from the BO (especially Varenna) unless you fly back from Milan instead--Lugano is also nice and is on the train line to Milan.

I'll put a plug in for Cochem! It is by far one of the most beautiful towns we have been to.
What are your interests? In Cochem, you can visit wineries & Burg Eltz... In Baden-Baden you could enjoy the baths... though we were no super impressed with the town itself...

you could also easily spend 3 nights in the Alsace area.

Hi JoannMJ
I would recommend that you fly into Munich.Car rentals are cheaper. Then go to Salzburg. I was in Berner Oberland area and stayed in Murren or if you prefer Interlaken. Good Trains to everywhere. Try Bern if it fits your schedule. Then pay extra to drop off your car in Zurich and get an open end (or open jaw) ticket and fly home from Zurich. You will find these tickets are cheaper and gives you an extra day in Zurich.

Thanks for all of your good suggestions. The open end ticket sounds like a good idea. I would like to see more of the Mosel area, having enjoyed the sites and shopped for Roman coins in Trier. Cochem sounds interesting. I have been to the Alsace region (Colmar) only as a day trip from Zurich, but would certainly consider going back to visit the surrounding towns and vineyards. Food, of course, was great.

I can always count on some really good ideas from this website that cause me to rethink my itinerary.

Again thanks to all.
