switzerland

I will be in switzerland for 3 1/2 days. I'm thinking of Laussane, Montreaux, Staad, Lucerne. Any suggestions for these places or any new places nearby. My base will be one night in laussane area and 2 nights in basel.
Thanks

In the hills above Montreux there is a small village...Glion...with a lovely hotel...Hotel Victoria...even if you don't book a room, go for the view &/or dinner!! (021) 963 31 31
When in Montreux....Chateau de Chillon...a beautiful & mysterious place.
Also in Montreux check out the small & very personal museum dedicated to Vladimir Nabokov. Nabokov spent many years in the surounding meadows pursuing his beloved butterflies!
Lausanne....One of my favorite museums...Musee de l'Art Brut...founded by Jean Dubuffet...an amazing collection. www.artbrut.ch

If you're interested in art and/or architrcture, you might want to consider checking out Basel itself. Places worth a visit include the Fondation Beyeler (www.beyeler.com), the Schaulager (www.schaulager.org), the Kunstmuseum Basel (www.kunstmuseumbasel.ch), the Tinguely Museum (www.tinguely.ch) or - right across the border in Germany - the Vitra Design Museum (www.design-museum.de - no permanent exhibition). Lucerne will make an easy day trip from Basel. If you have nice weather, you could go up Mt Pilatus. Enjoy.

If the timing is right for you, the Saturday early AM farmers market that sets up in the town square of Vevey (the town between Lausanne and Montreux) is very colorful, local, authentic, cheap, and delicious entertainment. It is an easy 5 min. walk from the train station. Lots of great places for lunch and small shops in this part of the 'old town'.

Chateux de Chillon as mentioned already, outside Montreux is a great OLD caste definitely worth a visit.

In Lausanne, Vevey, &/or Montreux walking along the quai (lakeside) on Lac Leman is gorgeous. There are also various boat tours available.

3-1/2 days seems awfully short for all the stops you have planned. Are you traveling by train or car? Four towns in less than four days not including travel between just seems an unusual itinerary. Maybe you have specific reasons, if so, ignore this last remark. Kindly, Susan

I'm wondering if this is a business trip of some sort, so you are locked in to your two stops. If not, well I'd reconsider and stay in one place for all three nights. The Lausanne/Lac Leman/Lavaux area could occupy two weeks easily, especially if you go into the hills toward Gruyeres, Chateau d'Oex, etc. When are you going?

If I'm right about being locked in, then you've already received some great advice: Stefan's suggestions for Basel sound wonderful, and Vevey seems an excellent choice for Lac Leman. If you arrive there early in the day and linger until noon the next, maybe you can sample both Lausanne and the Lavaux. J.
