I am planning a trip to Switzerland. Anyone have any ideas about places to stay and a possible travel plan?

Many of us can help with suggestions, Drew. To do so, we need to know when you're going, for how long, how you plan to travel in Switzerland, what your interests are, how tight a budget you're on, whether you're traveling alone or with someone. Provide us with that info and we can reciprocate. In the meantime, contact the Swiss National Tourist Office, either in New York or on the Internet. Pick up some good guide books, Rick Steves, Fodor, Insight, Baedecker, the Blue Guide, for example and YOU start planning.

My family and I spent 8 days in Switzerland last summer. We spent most of that time in the Berner Oberland area of the Jungfrau. We enjoyed it so much we are going to pass through again this summer. Specifically we stayed in a smaller town...... Wengen and did the side trips from there. It is one of the most fantastic areas I have ever been to. This small area is just packed with scenery, lakes and peaks. As BOB has mentioned you will get alot of advice from this site if you need to be more specific. Have a good time.

You should go to Interlaken--it is a beautiful little town with a great train ride to Grindelwald, Jungfrau,Lauterbrennen, etc. We stayed at Hotel Weisses Kruez near the Ost train station. You should check out Bucherer watch & clocks--best ones for value. They have a site & I ordered Xmas gifts with no problems. Of course, Zermatt is interesting--Matterhorn & no cars. You might want to email the Swiss embassey in D.C. We did that on our trip to Germany & Czech Republic with good results.

My favorite place in Switzerland is Zermatt...it's a charming village with gorgeous Alpine views. I've been there twice and you can email me if you have specific questions. Go to www.ski-zermatt.com for great information on the town. Someone mentioned Grindlewald, and I've also been there and enjoyed it. Definitely make time for a small Alpine town of some sort to get the best Swiss experience. Maybe add in a slightly larger town like Lucerne...very pretty city. P.S.--My travelogue to Zermatt is at www.lunadesigns.com/travels/.

Hi,

Just was in Switzerland this past May for 18 days.
Went to Bern via train from London. Bern, the
capital city, is a very liveable city with a great
downtown. Small yet busy. Took train to Interlaken
and went up in the ALPS. Being only May, I stayed
in Interlaken which was very busy and fun. Got a
train pass from the rail station (walking distance)
from my hotel. This pass give you unlimited train
travel to the Alpine towns of Wengen, Murren, etc.
Pay a little extra to go to the TOP of Piz Gloria
and the Jungfrau. If your going in summer or winter
stay in Wengen or Murren. When I was there in late
May, many of the shops, restaurants and even some
hotels were closed. (Between seasons). If I were at
home I could give more details, but Im in a hotel
in Jersey right now. Get some books on Switzerland
(i.e. Fodors, Frommers, Rick Steves) and depending
on your interests/budget have a GREAT time. It is a
beautiful place and some fun places.
GARY
Hi - have just returned from this favorite country. Be sure to go to St. Moritz and Zermatt - now my favorites, besides Interlaken. In Zermatt take the train up to Gornegrat for fantastic views, mainly of the Matterhown. In Lucerne take the trip up to Mt. Pilatus for equally wonderful views. Take a lake cruise wherever you can. Enjoy!
