Sundays/Mondays in Vienna

Planning a trip to Germany and Austria, where my return flight will be leaving from Vienna. If my last day in Vienna is either a Sunday or Monday, would this limit my opportunities for last-minute shopping or museum visits? I'd like to know if stores are generally open on Sundays, ditto for museums on Mondays. Danke viel mal.

You may find your shopping very limited on Sunday as most stores will be closed. However, the museums and Schoenbrunn are open so just plan your shopping for Monday. Bitte.

Stores will be closed on Sundays, Schonbrunn/museum shops will be open though. Sundays would limit your choice for shopping. Be aware also that shops can shut early on Saturdays as well.

lizbeth, i just returned from vienna last week. just about everything is closed on sundays. make sure to do the museums that are open these days as almost nothing else will be...except the souvenir shops. they really know how to make do with the day of rest over there, i couldn't even find a pharmacy open for a decongestant last sunday!

Chris is right about shops closing early on Saturday's. Some stores will also close for 2-3 hours over lunch, not so much in the tourist areas but in the suburbs for sure.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.<BR>I'll be going in early and mid-May - any comments on likely Vienna weather that time of year?<BR><BR>Are the coffee houses open 7 days a week, or are they closed on Sundays as well? I'd love to hear about some personal favorites - both in terms of specific cafes and the things you found memorable to eat and drink there.<BR><BR>DB, if you stayed at a hotel during your recent visit, could you let me know what your experience was? <BR><BR>

This website gives you some detailed info on various cafes in Vienna: http://www.tourist-net.co.at/coffee/coffee0e.htm. However, one of my personal favorites is not listed, Cafe Central, in the Palais Ferstel on Herrengasse. Also not to be missed is Demel's on Kohlmarkt. Very famous for their great pastries. Unfortunately, neither of these are open on Sunday. The Savvy Traveler website also has some info on Cafe Central and others (http://www.savvytraveler.com/show/features/2001/20010330/feature2.shtml).<BR><BR>Another restaurant you might like is the Griechenbeisl. It is steeped in history and the food is pretty good too. Their website is http://www.tourist-net.co.at/lokale/...sl/index_e.htm.
