Summer weather in Bavarian Alps?

We'll be in the area between Munich and Salzburg next month, and are wondering what the weather will be like... do we need jeans and sweatshirts, or shorts and t-shirts?

Got back from that area two weeks ago. At that time, the weather was quite warm in the day, but chilly at night. I would take some of each -- but more of the warm weather than the cool weather clothing. The mountains can be quite cool at night -- no matter the time of year.

Kate: We were in Germany for 10 days, returning June 2nd. We traveled from the Middle Rhine to Munich, Salzburg and to Garmisch. I wore shorts everyday even on our trip to the top of the Zugspitze. The first day was about 70, but there were days of around 80. It's rather unusual for Germany. I lived in Frankfurt before and usually didn't wear shorts all that often. I think that they will have an unusually warm summer.

I took the same amount of longs pants as shorts and only used the long pants on the flight both ways. I'd take a light jacket, some shorts and some pants and an umbrella. You'll be prepared.

I like Munich, But Old Salzburg is a lovely city. Take the funicular up to the fortress and have dinner, then walk thru the cemetary at the base when you come back down. The chapel is probably 700 years old.

Have fun, we sure did!
Prepare for some rain. We were there in 1993 and it was all sunny. We were back at the same time, June, in 1997 and lived in rain. You never know. I never put on any shorts in 1997. So, take an umbrella and light jacket and hope you never need them.....or buy one there if you do. Have a great trip. Salzburg and Berchtesgaden area are a lot of fun.

Bob-
I asked the question before our trip and now we're back. In one of the many books I read about Austria, it remarked that the gorgeous green valleys aren't so colorful because of manmade irrigation.... It rained the entire time we were in the Alps. We had to show our son postcards to let him know what it looked like behind all the clouds. Of course, the days we were in Munich and Vienna sightseeing it was in the mid 90's. That's a plug for not making firm reservations -- we could have been more flexible and worked around the weather! (of course, the mist on the mountains has its own beauty in a way!)

Just saw your response on the weather. Hope you had a great time anyway. We hit rain in 1997 but still enjoy the area and will be back again and again. I agree.....there is a reason all the area is so green and it ain't 100% sunny days!
