InterCity #258 which runs daily takes you from Milan (Centrale) leaving at 9:25 AM and arrives in Lucerne at 1:38 PM

I like the www.sbb.ch site.
There is an English version.
Just spell it Geneve.
Look in the upper right corner and click on the English word Federal.
You can get from Milano Centrale to Interlaken West in 4 hours, 4 minutes.
One change in Spiez.
To see the hills you need to go to Grindelwald. That takes a little longer.
You can get to Zermatt in 4:33.
You could get off the train in Kandersteg and take the chair lift up to the eschinensee. It is a gorgeous lake nestled in against 3,000 - 4,000 foot cliffs. If you want exercise, walk up the trail toward one of the mountain huts and look down on the lake from 1,000 feet up. (Eye catching is a slight understatement.)
You can get there in 3:33.

The URL is as follows:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
this is the English language..enter your starting and arrival stations, change the date as necessary and then click on search connections..use the German-like spelling for lucerne=Luzern.Bookmark the page if you wish...I find no other site as comprehensive for ALL of Europe as is this one aside from the Cook's Timetable

You can use the www.sbb.ch website as well (Swiss Railways). It also accepts English/French/Italian spelling.
