Hi
Since you will have a short time, I'm assuming you will go to one place in Italy. Do you know which place?
Do you want a city or resort area?
The next month or so can be pretty crowded in most popular places, and many small hotels/pensiones will be already fully booked. If you could narrow down a destination, that would help.

i would like to see rome, but if i get a good deal somewhere i can fly elsewhere. its been a while since i took a vacation so i am planning on taking one next month.
if you are suggesting that all the places will be crowded, do you have any other suggestions in europe? since i have never been to europe i think i would gladly take a good deal if it comes by.

HI
Rome is a big city, there's plenty of room for the crowds. Places like the Vatican Museums will have long lines. It will be hot. Some places close for vacation in August (not sightseeing venues, but some restaurants and shops.)
None of that means you shouldn't go.
I have a file on Rome; if you'd like to see it, email me.

Lots of places will seem "crowded" including the biggies in Italy but I wouldn't let that stop me..you want to go to Italy and I think you should but as Elaine has pointed out, because there may be a lot of people there you have to plan ahead.
You originally asked about the possibility of hotel, etc "deals." For those you may have to look at the usual sites like venere.com but you can also compare prices by looking at the various "discount" sites such as discounthotels or 180096hotels.com (or perhaps it is "hotel" singular. Anyway, not every room in every city will be sold out, even now..but looking around by trying various possible locations such as Rome, venice, Milan, etc., will give you a better idea of what might be available.
Now, if you REALLY want to just go someplace that isn't crowded you might try picking some small town in some country..but that won't be any fun. There's a reason people flock to Italy and other places...jump in and go along with them. Enjoy your trip.

I just returned from Italy. After extensive research everything I read said do NOT go in August. That's when the Italians take their vacations so lots of things are closed and it's hot. Maybe Scandinavia? Or go to Italy in September. What do you like to do? If you give this board more info you will get some good direction. good luck!

Since you indicated an interest in going to Italy, I would suggest spending your time on the Amalfi coast, in Positano or Sorrento. Not only will you get some R&R in one of the most beautiful spots on earth, but will be around a lot of wonderful places to visit during the day. The Villa Rosa in Positano http://www.villarosapositano.it/entrance.htm would be a magnificent retreat and a true vacation!
