Suggestions for Orkney and Shetland Islands
My husband and I are planning a trip to Scotland in May or June of 2019. We'd like to start in Glasgow, visit the Orkney and Shetland Islands in the middle, and end in Edinburgh. Which particular island would anyone suggest? Any thoughts re accommodations or can't-miss sights? We're outdoorsy people. Also, how many days would you devote to the Orkneys and Shetlands?

Orkney
My husband and I visited Orkney a few years ago in the middle of our Scotland trip.
We flew EDI to Kirkwall then to Inverness, but you might head elsewhere. Not a lot of flights, so that factored into our plans.
We only had 2 days, but would have enjoyed 3-4. The distances, flights, ferries, etc. do not lend themselves to quick tours. But we were glad we went.
Stayed in Benmora B&B in Kirkwall. We rented a car. There are a few tours and guides, but they weren't practical for us.
Saw the Stenness stones, the Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae, and Maeshowe in one day.
We didn't think Stromness was very interesting.
Hope this limited information helps.
