I loved my stay at The Hotel Arts. We had corner room on the high floor. From one side we had a view of Sagrada Familia - so beautiful; and partial view of marina from another side. Most hallways were decorated with live white lilies. The shower room was amazing; I wish to have the same at my house one day.

Thanks! My question about the Hotel Arts is distance from the "action" however. Did you find that was a problem?

I've done site inspections of both. Hotel Arts (affiliated with Ritz-Carlton) is a contemporary, comfortable, beautiful hotel - very luxurious, especially on a Club Floor (which gives an intimate sense of being in a hotel-within-a-hotel with its own desk to check-in and check-out, its own concierge services, and 5 food presentations during the day).

Casa Fuster is in one of the original Art Deco buildings built earlier in the 20th Century. Not as plush as Hotel Arts, but it is a great location. The rooms looking down the center of the avenue are especially wonderful.

There are more extensive reviews of these two hotels on the luxury hotel forum of FlyerTalk - http://tinyurl.com/yhsckj4

You should consult Maribel's great guide on Barcelona, updated March 09. She recommends Gran Lux Casa Fuster, Gran Lux Majestic, 1989, Atrium Palace, Inglaterra and Costanza.

IMO you really need to make a choice as to how close and to WHICH "action" you want to be....

the Arts is a wonderful hotel and if you don't mind using either public transport or a taxi to get to a lot of places it might be a great choice

The Atrium Palace is in a better (IMO) location for oevrall sightseeing but it is not nearly as "luxurious" as the Arts

This past November I stayed for the first time in the MonteCarlo which is across the street from the LeMeridien but is located ON for some people the absolutely dreaded Las Ramblas where all sorts of real life stuff goes on....

Have you looked at TripAdvisor?

real life on Las Ramblas !
Only if you consider the most touristy spot in the city "real life" along with American fast food chains, pick pockets and live "statues".
Yuck.

Probably the very best rooms in Barcelona has hotel Boria BCN. The location is excellent, right in El Born. It is a very small boutique hotel without restaurant (there are many restaurants in walking distance) and with apartment-like suites. Excellent furnishing. Absolutely outstanding.

Stayed in Barcelona in late November and had a great hotel... Hotel Comtes de Barcelona. It was the selection of Celebrity Cruise line for us....and great! It is central and on the 'Barcelona Tour" bus route where you can get on get off all day! The hotel has a fabulous breakfast so a light lunch is all you need. It is located where lots of street cafe and shops and restaurants are available. Would recommend this hotel to friends.

As mentioned by Aurorauna above, Mandarin Oriental. I believe it's opened recently, on the Passeig de Gracia in Eixample, a central area I like to stay.
