train from Paris to Avignon
We are planning to travel from Paris to Avignon by train, what is the advantage of a first class seat? Usually we do not get first class seat unless recommended as it was in some eastern Europe countries

I only buy a 1st class seat if there is a small price difference - maybe 5-10€ at most.

The usual!
2+1 seating across car width in 1st versus 2+2 in 2nd class. So more elbow room as well as more legroom, and tables for two and solo seats in 1st as well as tables for four and dual side by side seats.
No free limo transfers or masseuses waiting with champagne for you. Just plusher roomier seating, that's it!
Whichever class you choose, book an upstairs seat for the best view (most trains are TGV Duplex on this route) and use www.capitainetraine.com

I always book one on long distance trains, never on shorter runs. IOt's the usual, you have to depend how important it is to you. It's just a little more comfortable and usually less crowded, which I like. Probably not as important as in Eastern Europe, that's for sure, 2nd is perfectly acceptable.
In fact, if you book tickets in advance, like PREMs, sometimes there isn't much of a difference at all.
There is no advantage to using Capitaine Train if you can read French (most people who use it don't know French), IF SNCF has no trouble with your CC. Sometimes in the last year or two I have had trouble with SNCF accepting my American CC, and I never used to. I"ve heard that isn't a problem on Capitaine Train, but I've never used it.

The advantage of using Capitraine to book tickets is that they will accept U.S. issued credit cards while it seems to be hit or miss on the SNCF site. Another advantage is that it is easier to navigate.

Thanks Christina and f1racegirl. I used my AMEX on the SNCF site in 2011 and again now in 2015 with no problems. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything (like special offers/discounts or added benefits) by not using the Capitraine site.
