I just wanted to make a comment with regards to the Montepulciano market day. We arrived in Montepulciano in March, unaware of the market day, and traffic was a royal mess. Roads were blocked, an entire parking lot was closed for the market, and there were people and cars everywhere. It took us probably a good half an hour to get into a lot to get a parking spot, and this was in March!

And I totally agree with bobthenavigator; this market was really tacky. There were some produce and meat stands, but most of it seemed to be junk like table after table of used clothing and childrens toys. It kind of looked like a mix between a flea market and a yard sale.

I would just consider the parking and traffic situation before you decide on Montepuliano for a market day, because it really was a mess.

Otherwise I think your itinerary looks great, and it looks like you will have a great trip!

This is great information but I am concerned that as we are arriving in Montepulciano on Saturday late afternoon shops and wine tastings are closed on Sunday and most don't open until 3 p.m. Monday. My daughter is coming with us from London and flying back home on Tuesday evening. Is there anything to do Sunday and Monday? We had planned on going to Siena Sunday but do you think we shouldn't? I just reread all the posts and it seems that Pienza shops will be open. Is that right? Do you think we should do Pienza on Monday and could anyone recommend a good restaurant? Thanks for any replies. I've been planning this for so long that my head is spinning with all the info. Not that I'm complaining as I could not do it without all your wonderful input.
