On our last trip to France we did a considerable amount of walking in cities like Monaco, Paris etc. where we covered great distances on foot. Some days my feet really hurt! This year we're off to Switzerland and Austria so I just purchased a kit that contains a special foot cream to soothe those aching feet and also includes slippers to put on after applying the cream for better absorption (wear to bed at night).

A GENEROUS supply of Lactaid!!! I am horribly lactose intolerant, and the last two weeks of my summer program in Paris and Geneva were made miserable by my running out of it. Yes, I know, I should just avoid dairy, but I was in France and Switzerland for pete's sake!! Apparently, the French do not suffer from Lactose intolerance. I thought my ability to communicate with French and Swiss pharmacists was a language barrier, but they just had no idea to what malady I was referring! I ended up with anti-acid, anti-gas, and finally anti-pain pills, but still no Lactaid! An American pharmacist working at Cornavin Sta. finally explained that it's not sold in Europe! Alas.

More Allegra. I brought it for itchy fly bites that I had in Greece last year, but this year, something was blooming in Spain and Portugal that made me a weeping coughing mess. I used up my Allegra and wound up using most of the Tylenol cold and jeopardizing my liver because I refuse to not drink on vacation!

Also an umbrella. We quit bringing them years ago and desperately needed one for two days this time. Almost bought one and then it cleared up.

A small bottle of rubbing alcohol and more band-aids; yep, for those blisters I got and didn't anticipate.

This is (for the most part) a really helpful thread....way to go, Nancy!

Rather than sachets, I tuck Bounce dryer sheets all thru my suitcase....mmmmmm. When I get to my hotel, I take them out and put them in the pillowcases and under the blankets...my bed soon smells just like home!

I've also wished I'd taken a foot-soaking solution (do they sell Epsom salts in Paris?).

These are things I DO take, discovered after many years of travel: an umbrella for the sun (My husband is a professor so we can only travel in summer). I may look silly, but it keeps me cool and sunburn free, and I can sit anywhere not have to fight for the scrap of shade somewhere. I buy the lighest weight possible and have one in white for the tropics and one in beige for Europe.
In response to the idea of a sink stopper: better cut off some on one side since so many sink drains are set near the side of the sinks and the full rounds don't fit watertight. the night light is a good idea, as in an immersion coil heater and tiny drip coffee set for those who don't want to spend a fortune to wake up. BUT, buy both in Europe since our 110 night lights and coil heaters won't work there. I think its also part of the travel experience to go to a store the locals use in order to find these items; I've never had a problem with not knowing the language because you just get the items off the display racks and stand in line to pay.

Annie, my lactose-intolerant daughter had the same experience in Spain, there was no such thing as Lactaid. The woman at the Spanish pharmacy shrugged and said, "You just can't eat dairy products." (Thank you, that's very helpful...) I ended up mailing a small supply to her every couple of weeks.

About those Bounce sheets. I did that too and agree that my packing smelled great, but it took me a while to figure out that all those "grease spots" on my clothes were a result of being packed tightly against Bounce sheets -- especially in the heat. They actually left major "grease spots" on my clothes.
