Some friends and I are planning a day in Venice before we take the night train to Paris. 3 of us will have small suitcases but we will have picked up a 4th in Florence who will have just finished a school year and have more luggage. Is it possible to check luggage at the train station?

In October, I saw luggage stations in Venice, Florence, Rome, and Milan. They charge about 3 to 3.5 euros per bag, for five hours, then about 1 euro per bag for each additional hour. In Rome, they tied my shopping bag to my luggage and charged me for only one bag. My bags also had to go through an x-ray machine. The line was verrrry long. In Milan, they charged me for two bags, even though I had tied them together (after learning from Rome). Milan also made a copy of my passport before they would accept my bag. The line was relatively short.

I didn't use the Venice left luggage, but I would assume it's similar in price/practice.

Yes baggage place in Venice S Lucia station should be open though lockers in Italy, what few they had, have been closed. Tip, show up well before your train to retreive your bags, if lines aren't long handlers may be slow or even inexplicably on break.

There is, both lockers and a manned luggage check area. We used the latter, and it was no worries.

We used the luggage check area in St. Lucia this spring with no problems - it was easy and we were lucky not to encounter a line. Made getting on and off vaporetti much easier with a couple of duffel bags instead of the whole shebang. I swear my bags start multiplying the moment I hit European soil. We start off the trip with only a carry-on for each of us and leave with n number of checked-in bags as well
