Stonehenge

What's the best way to see Stonehenge without renting a car or taking an organized tour? Thanks.

Easy - train to Salisbury and local bus to Stonehenge. Plus there is the added bonus of a visit to Salisbury/Salisbury Cathedral.

From where? There are point to point buses that pass by Stonehenge, but in most cases, taking a tour bus is the best option.

Oh - meant to add - w/ a cheap day return train ticket and a very inexpensive bus fare, doing it on your own will cost a fraction of an organized guided tour and has the advantage of being completely on your own schedule.

The http://www.wdbus.co.uk will get you from Salisbury (SAULSbree) station to the henge for a few quid. Tickets are sold inside the station (on the left before you exit), and the bus stops right outside (on the left after you exit).

Hi, If yuo are in Salisbury, do go to the cathedral and take the tower tour where they take you right up into the roof and inside the spire. It's brilliant! I think the cathedral kicks Stonehenge! If you want to really get in amongst standing stones, go to Avebury nearly. there are stones throughout all of avebury village, no tourists and you can walk right up to them and touch them, unlike Stonehenge where you have to walk along a little track well away from the stones.
