My family and I are visiting London in april. We want to visit Stonehenge does anyone have a suggestion on the best way to get there? Rental car? Does the train go there?

I took the train to Salisbury and from there bought a ticket for a bus tour. It was pretty easy, I think I just went to the TA at the train station. I liked the tour bus with guide - we got lots of interesting information that we would not have learned on our own. I can't recall how long the train ride was but I think it is doable as a day trip.

We took a bus trip to stonehedge and bath. We found and booked it while we were there through a flyer in the hotel. It was very easy

We drove over there from Burford a few years ago. Nice trip over. No real problems, but we were not stretched for time. We also did Bath that day. Depends on if you want to drive or want a tour.

Take the train to Salisbury but also make sure you don't miss Salisbury Cathedral. I think it is better than stonehenge!!

We drove to Stonehenge and Bath. They are both worth seeing in a day. If you don't mind driving the ride is very nice once out of the city. A bus trip would also be good.

Options have been pretty well covered, arranged day tour from London including transport (and sometimes another stop), driving yourself or combination train/bus.

Do you know about the inner circle access? This allows you to get closer to the stones that regular access but it's limited to very early or very late in the day. Astral tours and another co. (whose name escapes me right now) offer this, but you can also arrange special access on your own if you're prepared to rent a car.

There's lots of info already here on options for Stonehenge. Here's 1 previous thread I found but you can search for others.

One of the best tour cos. is London Walks (www.walks.com) They do explorer days. They have 1 to Stonehenge & Salisbury. For some reason their website is not working right now.
