Still needing recommendations for lodgings ~60GBP per night in SE Wales

Yes I'm resurrecting this question. I'll have a car, am going solo, and will need 2-3 nights (hopefully in one place) to easily do half-day trips to Caerphilly, Raglan, Chepstow, Tintern Abbey, and finally Goodrich Castle on my way back to Manchester Airport. I've searched websites till my eyes are bleeding, but would so much prefer to hear directly from folks who have really enjoyed their stays. I generally look for small hotels or guesthouses, but larger B&B's are similar, I think, in not being too intimately a part of a family. Non-smoking, no-pets are a must. Please chime in!

All I can speak for is Cardiff - would that work for you ? The Ibis there is OK. In May we are staying at the Mercure between the centre & the bay which we got for £45pn. Lots of B&Bs in Victorian/Edwardian houses by the river north of the centre, between the Millennium Stadium & Llandaff Cathedral - if that's of interest, there was a post recently re accommodation in Cardiff which mentioned options in that area.

Oh, and we stayed in a good pub in Abergavenny once - any use ? It was a few years ago but it was about £50pn. If of interest let me know & IK'll try to work out which one it was.

Thanks so much for the reply Caroline. Can't believe I forgot to say that this trip I'm wanting to not go into Cardiff or Newport. But your suggestions may be of help to someone else here!

Have you looked on the Alastair Sawday website? There are lots of nice looking B&Bs in Wales, many under £60 per night for a single.

I'm not sure if you're looking for the total anonymity of a Travelodge but there are a few in and around your points of interest.

There's one in Monmouth near Raglan for example.

They would probably be well within your budget

I use the chain often as they're always conveniently located and although basic they're reliably consistent and inexpensive.
