It is a perfect day trip - but plan that it will take ALL day - from first thing in the morning to well after dark.
I would recommend doing it independently though. I went with a tour bus and it was horrible - they made multiple stops to "advertise" various things - cameo factory, etc. I just wanted to get to Pompeii. Then we had to drop everyone off at their hotel so it took 2 hours to get back to the hotel after arriving in Rome, talk about frustrating!!

I did the Pompei day trip and it was well worth it. Although I agree that it was a pain to have to stop at the cameo factory, having a guide walk us through Pompeii was great. If you do it on your own, you might want to get a good guide book so you'll know what it is you're looking at.

I think it would be very tiring to do the trip from Rome. We just went from Naples and spent ALL day there (at Pompeii)- very tiring but absolutely fascinating. We found it easy to follow the guide book and preferred to go at our own pace rather than following a guide.

I took the Enjoy Rome shuttle bus to Pompeii from Rome, which you can read about at www.enjoyrome.com. There were no stops at factories, just a rest stop on the way to Pompeii. We were on our own for almost three hours in Pompeii, then the bus got us back to Rome in time for dinner. The price was well under that for the tour bus companies. I thought it would be a very tiring day trip, but in fact the bus ride was very relaxing and the entire day was one of the highlights of our trip.
