capo - About seeing Venice first, I have often wondered if the rest is less impressive than it would have otherwise been just because of all the comments about how stunning and moving Venice is to most people. Obviously, it didn't work that way for you. How about your g/f? I hope you really like that girl because after sharing all those wonderful places, you must have created quiet a bond! Best wishes either way!

Has anyone else felt letdown by the rest after seeing Venice first or is it too much like comparing apples to oranges for that to happen?

Oops! I didn't mean let down, but less moved. Sorry about not separating let and down in the first post and forgetting the comma. I really should preview my reply more often before posting.

I don't know about a key to a best fare, I just look as many different places as I can.

I live in NYC, so on Delta could fly directly in or out of Venice, and use Rome on the other end. But that's not to say that other airlines or consolidators aren't offering cheaper fares.

Good question, RLA...thanks. Actually leaving Venice and going directly to Rome was a bit of a let-down for both us, at first. While we liked our hotel in Rome, it didn't have nearly the character of our locanda in Venice (with a room overlooking a picturesque rio) and Rome is, of course, a much more intense and larger city.

But later that night, we spent a wonderful four hours drinking wine and people-watching in a cafe in the Piazza della Rotonda....and from there we went to Piazza Navona, where we had a nice chat with a priest (who also blessed us) inside the church of Saint Agnese, and then watched a marvelously-talented French mime/dancer in the piazza, with my girlfriend joining him for a couple dancers, much to the delight of the crowd. So, by the end of that evening, she had fallen in love with Rome, and I'd fallen in love with the Eternal City all over again and, while we were still missing Venice, that feeling was not nearly as strong as when we had first arrived in Rome earlier in the day.

We both loved Siena -- especially the locanda we found there -- and Tuscany, and my girlfriend was completely enthralled by Vernazza and the rest of Cinque Terre (which I'd been to once before, in 1987.)

Since this was her first-ever trip to Europe, I'd originally made plans around Paris and Rome, my two favorite large European cities. But then I started thinking of going back to Venice (having been there on that same '87 trip) and when she heard Venice, her eyes lit up and she told me it had always been her dream to go there...so we did. We could not have asked for a better beginning to our trip.

capo- I can just feel your thrill of the moment when introducing her to those exhilirating ( < I'm lost for the best adjective to put here.) places. Likewise, I can feel her thrill in the moment of discovery. How incredibly romantic! In our 21 years together, the best times my DH have had together are traveling and discovering new places together. We haven't made it to Europe yet, but are determined to. Won't it be fun!

I also did a similar trip, starting with Rome and ending with Venice. This turned out to be perfect planning, because by the time I reached Venice I was exhausted. How wonderful it was to do nothing but sit by a canal watching the boats go by!

I've found it's always better to start a vacation with high-energy cities, and then (by the time I am almost burned out) end the vacation by visiting a more relaxing place.

Like most posting here, I too usually prefer to start in the high energy city and wind down. On a trip this past March to Roma/Firenze/Venezia I upset the apple cart and found it rather enjoyable. We flew into Rome (direct and cheap flight) and took the airport train to Stazione Termini where we hopped right on a train to Firenze. While it added a couple of hours to the trip, at least we were able to do some walking on the train.

Our trip from Firenze to Venezia was also by train, but rather than the long trip back to Roma, we caught a one hour Luftansa flight (USD $79). Marco Polo was a pretty sharp little airport and by catching the 8pm flight, we arrived at our hotel in Roma in time for bed (or more accurately put, we got to spend the entire day riding the Vaporetto's!)

We flew into Rome and took the train to Venice...
We started our trip in Venice, such an enchanting, incredibly different wonderland.
Then took the train to Florence, another different and beautiful place.
Then to Rome, incredible.
Each place was very different, my memories are very vivid, and starting in Venice did not take away from the rest of our trip.
La Dolce Vita!
Have a wonderful time!
