The Hotel Astori is a turn of the century (1900) massive hotel (full square block) with a variety of restaurants, clubs and a casino frequented by the local mafia. Since it was rehabbed rom a nearlier age some of the rooms tend to be rahter eccentric. (We booked a standard double but got a large sort of living room plus another very small room with a large bed in it.)
The location if good for the Hermitage and one of the cathedrals - but not great for Nevsky Prospekt.
Given a choice I would do the Nevsky Palace - but don;t know what the rates are now (better restaurants and great spa as well as a more central vacation).

We just got back from St Petersburg...
Do you mean the Grand Europe Hotel? If so, it really is the best in St. Petersburg... expensive but lovely. Great location, great facilities, service, rooms, food... If you can afford it, it is where you want to stay.

Hands down the best hotel in St. Petersburg is Eliseev Palace Hotel, located at the Moika and Nevsky Prospect. Most of the clients we send them have never heard of it, but they all come back raving. It is the only hotel in St. Petersburg that is a converted palace (built by Eliseev, gourmet food provider). Contains 30 rooms (with some of the best fabrics you have ever seen!). My wife and mother in law both consider it the best hotel in Russia, better even than what Moscow offers.
The Astoria and the Grand Hotel Europa are also good hotels (clients usually find the Astoria to be a better value, especially since the management changes at the Europa).

Yes you're right, the Eliseev Palace is remarkable, a fabulous and very expensive boutique hotel!! If you are choosing between the Grand Europe and the Astoria, I still think the Grand Europe wins hands down, and the service is fine (even with or perhaps because of new management). It's the little touches that count. Example, my husband would go out running in the mornings, and after the second day, they were waiting at the front door with fresh towels and a bottle of water for him when he got back.
