Squeegees and Shammies - Holland Part 1
After what seems like years of planning, Sept. 17th was finally here. We flew nonstop on flight 34 Seattle to Amsterdam. The flight was uneventful. We arrived at Schiphol and made our way to the Sixt rental car desk. With easy we were in our Saab traveling down the highway toward the Afsluitdijk. (From 1927 to 1932, a 30.5 km (19 mile) long dike called Afsluitdijk (the Closing Dike) was built, turning the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer, a freshwater lake.) We stopped on the Dijk for photos and a cold drink. It was very windy. The dijk is an amazing feat of engineering.
We arrived in Sneek around noon. After getting lost a few times we found the Le Boat base. We were greeted as old friends and shown to our boat. We chose the Clipper as it has 2 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. Perfect for 2 couples.
This is our 2nd time using www.leboat.com. In 2001 we did the "Flamingo Cruise" in the South of France. We loved it so much we decided to do it again in Holland. We chose the "Best of Holland" cruise. It being a 7-10 night, oneway cruise. We could not have been happier with our choice.
After getting suitcases on board we went to the grocery store to stock up for the voyage.
Albert Heijn is the Safeway of Holland with stores in about every town. They have wonderful selections of veggies/meats/cheeses. Not to mention the best cookies
We bought several bags worth and were satisfied that we would eat like royality for the next few days.
We were to drop our rental car in Sneek. The employees at LeBoat arranged for them to come and pick up our car at the marina for no extra charge. That was nice of them.
We spent the first night at the dock in Sneek, waking early the next morning. We were SO ready to get our trip underway. The staff briefed us on the boat and we were ready.
our traveling companion owns a boat in Seattle and was our Capt. on the 2001 trip, so we knew we were in good hands. With instruction and a levelhead I think anyone could comandeer any of their boats.
Not too far from Sneek, we saw our first windmill up close and personal. We would learn to love these structures over the next week. we saw many under repair, some being renovated into a home.
Our first stop was Langweer. What a charming little town. There is one main street with several businesses. There was a grocery store, bakery, book store and several restaurants. It was very walkable. There was a beautiful old church with headstones all around the grounds.
The marina was very nice and its restrooms was squeeky clean with squeegees and shammies in every stall !!
All the homes in the town were so well manicured and everything in perfect order.
The town like out of a movie set.
More to come....... i am at work....

hi het,
we were in Giethoorn for my birthday.. We took a boat tour. It was so fun. The little village is like a postcard with its flowers and thatched roof houses.
All I want is to be back on board the Clipper.
When we were in Sneek getting the boat, the kid that worked there had a cute accent. I love to immitate him now...
He said...
Then you "Shail from Shnake.." (sail from Sneek)
Now with tears in our eyes we all say..
We want to "Shail from Shnake"
This was one of our best times of our lifes. I cant recommend it more highly. www.leboat.com is my friend.
