Spoleto or Orvieto
The night before going to Rome, I'd like to stay at some interesting hill town that is nearby on the train line and that has car rental drop-off. Orvieto and Spoleto seem to fit the bill.
I'd appreciate opinions on which would be a better overnight. If Orvietom any hotel recommendations. (I've already got several good candidates for Spoleto.)

Have visited both, but my choice is undoubtedly Orvieto. Have been there frequently, but never in a hotel.
Some basic googling with ""orvieto"
"albergo" should help you along, methinks.

I adored Spoleto, but haven't been to Orvieto, so can't compare. We did a day trip to Spoleto last April, and it was truly a magical day, and a nice, quiet interlude on a whirlwind trip. We started on the far side of the Ponte delle Torre (?) and walked over into the town. We were practically the only tourists that we saw that day (a welcome change!).
The duomo is not grand by Italy standards, but it was where I had the most peaceful and spiritual moments of our trip. A dear old priest took us to a darkened side chapel to show us a letter written by St. Francis.
I'm sure mine was a very individualistic experience, but I look forward to some day returning to Spoleto. Since mine was a day trip, I can't offer any tips for overnight accomodations or activities.

Hi oreed,
You can't go wrong.
Orvieto has a nice ride up the hill by funicular. It is also the home of
I Sette Consoli, Pzza Sant?Angelo 1A phone/fax 011 39 0763 343911, one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure to visit.

We had this same question a couple years ago. We flipped a coin (literally) and went with Spoleto. I liked it a lot.
I would not recommend it to anyone with a bad back or sore calves, because there is a lot of walking up hills. If I had to do it again, I would probably listen to the advice of the posters here and go with the big O.
