Quick Question: How many nights do you recommend in Split? Thanks!

I would spend 2 nights in Split, with one day spent in Split and the other exploring Trogir and other towns nearby. I personally am not a huge fan of Split so we found that one afternoon spent there was plenty, but others seem to enjoy it quite a bit.

Split is not my first choice, either. I would tend to stay in Trogir instead. It is much more charming and quaint and such a joy to stroll compared to Split.

However, not everyone is like me so I would reckon one night in Split would be enough to see all that it offers and more time in Trogir if you have the chance.

I like Split more than Trogir .
Split is a large city and more interesting IMO. Trogir is charming, but after a couple of hours we didn't know what to do.

from Split you can also take a day trip to lovely Supetar on Brac .

To each their own...I was ready to leave Split after a few hours. I loved Trogir even though its smaller.

Split and Trogir are only 1/2 an hour apart by car. I would rent a car and spend a day in each, but I would say that it doesn't matter so much where you're actually staying.
Trogir is closer to the Split airport, if that makes a difference.

We thought Split was very interesting, at least the UNESCO desginated area. Lots of history and several nice places to shop and eat. The fish market is great and your nose will tell you way before you see it that it is near.

We were only there for one day so spent it all in Split.

I would disagree with Travel3D's advice only as to renting a car. IMO a car in either Trogir or Split would be a burden. A public bus runs frequently between the two towns, and each can be seen most conveniently on foot.

You will enjoy both, I'm sure.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. The conflict as to Split or not Split seems to be so much personal likes. This is true for my friends who have been there as well as this board.

We will have a car because we are traveling further--Dubrovnik and maybe Montenegro.

We are experienced travelers. Last year we spent the year in Italy. But for some reason, planning this trip is becoming a real challenge. I need all the help I can get.

Be sure to be able to visit Diocletians palace around dawn, before the tourist bric-brac is set up. Then you can visualize the audacity and majesty of the Roman shell, which for me rivals the Roman colleseum for thrill factor.

I realize most folks hate the place, but they came at the wrong time and blunted their imagination. After you get the picture early, then as the tourist stuff is set you can proceed on to the fabulous underground display or aboveground museum section and mentally have it put in proper context. I think this palace is a "touristic IQ test" where some will have a transcendant experience and others will never get it.

You can always island hop to Hvar, etc the rest of your time - have the schedules worked out beforehand to avoid the usual catch22s.

We spent over 45 days this year in Croatia and Split was one of our less favorite spots. We stayed on the sea near Trogir and just took a bus into Split. That worked for us.

The harbor is nice and Diocletians palace ( especially outside crowded times) is definitely worth seeing), but I would not spend a whole lot of time there. Split is a working town, not a tourist town and has a lot of glut.

It is a great place to catch a boat to Hvar, Korcula ( both worth seeing and the most touristed islands) or any where.

Our favorite places were Dubrovnik, Bay of Kotor, the coast between Dubrovnik and Split, Hvar & Korcula and other small islands, Rovinj and Plitsvice Park.

Hi WT--(I am always so tempted to use your real name). Of course I have checked out what you have said of your wonderful time in Croatia--how nice that would be. You know how difficult this 2 week thing is for us--not our usual style at all. But.......what we have is what we have. These decisions are so difficult.

Many on this board spend less time in larger and more interesting countries.

I loved Split. We went to their fabulous archeological museum and also out to the Greek settlement of Solonia. We had a car. We spent 2 nights there. Would recommend a formal tour of the palace if you really want to see it well.

I spent 2 nights in Split and 1 in Trogir. 1 night was more than enough in Trogir. 2 nights in Split were not enough. The restaurants, cafes and sights in Split were great. Plus, it's a bigger city filled with both locals and tourists. Trogir is charming, but tourist filled and you can really cover it all within a few hours, IMO.
