Spiez Vacation Apartment/Restaurants

I want to use Spiez as my home base for a week or so next May 2004. Does anyone have experience with a particular Ferienwohnung (vacation apt) that was well liked? Suggestions for comfortable Gaststube for cozy, inexpensive to moderately-priced Swiss specialty dinners? Best streets/areas to look for my apt? I am well familiar with other towns in the area, and would like input only on Spiez please. Thanks!

I am just back from a vacation in the Bernese Oberland, stayed in Adelboden, so I cannot help with a particular apt., sorry.

However, I made a day trip to Spiez and liked it a lot. You should definitely try to get an apartment away from the main road, because it is very busy. I think your best option is somewhere on a slope around the bay, maybe near the vineyards.

I did not have a meal there, but I passed by Hotel des Alpes, which looked cosy. Also, they had written on a board that they served specialties from Kanton Graubünden that day: Pizokels (Pizzocheri neri), Gerstensuppe (barley soup), deer etc. Made me yummy right away!

I've always thought Spiez was a lovely town as well, Ingo and rach, and am unable to contribute a single bit of info here. Have you tried the Thunersee website? If we continue to top, someone may have personal experience to share. Actually I'm writing this to ask Ingo what is "pizzocheri neri"?

Pizzocheri neri is a sort of pasta, made of buckwheat meal. Because it is a little darker than usual pasta it is called neri (=black).

Yes, jw, the site www.thunersee.ch is very helpful for apartments, too. And you might check www.maporama.com to search for the street and exact location.
