Sperlonga and Ponzo

Hi all

Does anyone have any experience of Sperlonga or Ponzo?

Hoping to add a few days at the beach onto a trip to Rome in June. We will have been hot and sightseeing in the city so happy to take it easy. Probably wont hire a car and will do it by train / bus / ferry.

Which one would people recommend, and why? Would you do 4 nights in Rome and 3 at the beach or vice versa?

Many thanks

We stayed in Sperlonga last October, which was post-season. The weather was still summer-like, yet we had the place and the beach to ourselves. We stayed in an airbnb in the old town for a very affordable price. We loved it. Miles of beach AND an old town, what's not to love. Very friendly people. We had a car, and it was super easy driving from Rome, and it allowed us to visit nearby places like San Felice, Gaeta, and the spectacular Monte Cassino abbey (re-creation). You can also easily drive to the Caserta Royal Palace. If you go by rail, I believe you have to take a short bus ride for the last portion of the trip.

Yes, you have to take a bus to Sperlonga from the station of Fondi-Sperlonga. There are bus departures about once an hour in summer. I would suggest keeping your car until after a trip to Sperlonga.

Ponza is an island, you have to get there by boat from various towns south of Rome, including Anzio. Getting to the port is a bit complicated, because the train stations in all the towns are not terribly near the port. No cars are allowed on the island, so you'd have to leave the car parked at the port on the mainland. I wouldn't want to do this with a rental car, so if you decide to go there, you should probably return the car first.

There are numerous other seaside towns easily reached by train or bus. North of Rome, Santa Marinella has a train station, a castle, and a long sandy beach. South of Rome, Anzio and Nettuno are both easily reached by train.

Right in the city of Rome, Ostia Lido has a long beach. In some places it's very built up and in other places it's almost totally natural. Ostia is served by an urban train, at the cost of a bus/metro ticket.

I've been to Ostia and Santa Marinella, but not to go to the beach, so I can't compare them as beach resorts.

Ponza and Ventotene:
There are usually more ferries from Formia (where I would park the car).
Another nice Island in the area is Isola de Giglio.
