Spanish Steps ROME: where to stay?

I am planning a first-time trip to Rome in May and would like to stay at a hotel close to the Spanish Steps.

Does anyone know of any great places for around 300 Euro or less for two people?

We loved the Intercontinental Hotel at the top of the Spanish Steps. I'm not sure of the price range but it's worth checking out.

The IC is sometimes a Priceline hotel. Otherwise, you would be hard pressed to find it at that price.

You might find a deal on the Valadier on Venere..and if you are really lucky on De Russie. We've stayed at Scalinata de Spagna, but I really like being at the bottom of the Stairs rather than at the top. Have you looked at the Mozart?

The Hotel Fontanella Borghese is about three blocks down the Via Condotti from the Spanish Steps in the direction of the Tiber. Definitely within your price range and a hotel we have used on three visits to Rome.

The Hotel San Carlo was a well located, nicely priced friendly little hotel. We climbed about 4 sets of stairs to get to our room so beware of that. (Good exercise after all the pasta.)Our room was small but nicely detailed and had a new shower.

The front desk was very helpful and even let me use their computer to send an e-mail. This is not a deluxe hotel by any means but a good choice for someone seeking a good location on a medium-small budget.

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Mozart or the Vivaldi Luxury Suites?

I tried to find a review for it in either fodor's or frommer's and the only place that reviewed it was tripadvisor. But, it did really well on tripadvisor [#43/1018]!

And thanks for the suggestion jody! I hadn't looked at the Mozart yet, but am intrigued...

While in Rome last May, I picked up cards from these hotels, which had lobbies and front desks that looked very nice, but also more expensive than our Domus Julia:

La Lumiere di Piazza di Spagna (Spanish steps), has rooftop dining, is in an old mansion on Condotti street. More expensive than our Hotel Julia, I'm sure. www.lalumieredipiazzadispagna.com.

Hotel Barberini, Via Rasella 3, a four-star just up the street from the Domus Julia, across from Barberini Palace and near the Spanish steps. [email protected]

We stayed at Domus Julia, a great value and nice little hotel, also very close to the Spanish Steps. It’s the apartment annex to the Hotel Julia, so you check in and have breakfast buffet at the hotel. It is a fine little place, in a great location, at a very reasonable price. We had a double/twin room, which was large enough by European standards (and is pictured on their website quite accurately). It was 170EUR, with a private bath, and including the breakfast buffet. We entered our room via a nice dining room/kitchen common area. There were two other units which shared that space, and I think they are larger apartments. They offer a 13EUR shuttle from the airport, which is a big cost-savings.
