Spain in October
I'm thinking of the Smartours trip to Portugal and Spain this fall. It is exactly where I want to go and have been on 3 other tours with them and have always been happy with them. However, the first available date is October 15 departure. How will the weather be at that time of year? I know Spain is a big country, but I don't relish spending two weeks in cold or rain. Would it be better to plan ahead for next spring? Will greatly appreciate any information about the weather in October in Spain. Gracias!

If you go to weather underground, www.wunderground.com, and find the travel planner, you can enter the place and dates of your travel for a 7 year historical record of weather. If you then have questions about a specific place, you can post it on this board. The Iberian Peninsula has several distinct climate zones and it is impossible to comment on weather for an entire month and the whole of two countries in any useful way. For example, two weeks ago, it was warm and clear in Malaga, cool and partly cloudy in Madrid, and raining very hard in Valencia on the same day.

We were in Spain this past October & had great weather. We were in Barcelona & then drove north up the Costa Brava, to Girona and through the Pyrenees. We had very little rain, & temps were primarily in the 70's in Barcelona & 60's everywhere else. We couldn't have asked for better weather!

October will normally be fine and warm in the South, some 75°F. http://www.andalusia-web.com/climate.htm

We were in Spain October 2010 and the weather varied. We went to Malaga, Granada, Seville and Madrid (with day trips to Toledo and Cordoba) and for most of our trip it was nice out -- 70s. I wore sleeveless tops with pants and sometimes sleeveless dresses and my husband wore short sleeves and pants or short sleeves and shorts. In a few cities (Toledo and Madrid I believe) it was cooler, particularly Madrid. I wore carigans or light jackets most days and it got pretty cold at night. (Madrid was also at the tail end of our trip)
When we were preparing to leave the weather forecast said rain every day! We didn't even pack an umbrella with us and hoped for the best (we figured we would buy one there if we needed it). We got very lucky... it rained while we were in Granada but luckily right after we finished at the Alhambra. Other than one other drizzle it was sunny for the rest of our 11-12 day trip.

The trip starts in Lisbon. Then Seville, Costa del Sol, Tangier, Granada, Toledo, Madrid. And there is a three day extension available to Barcelona. By the time I get to NYC from Guatemala, spend a few days, go on the trip, spend a day or two on the way back, and then get home; it is enough time away. Still cannot decide on the fall trip or wait until spring...
