Loved Santillana del Mar. Spent 2 nights there. It is heavily touristed during the day. I did daytrips to Comillas and the Altimira caves during the day and came back late afternoon when the tourists were mostly gone.

Great convent cookies there too!

Re Barcelona duration, do u think I should add a day to Barcelona by removing a day from Pamplona?

Also santallina del mar or honsarribia for two nights?

Hondarribia/Fuenterrabia is a very nice place:

If you only go here for a lunch on a day-trip from San Sebastián, I can highly recommend the fish soup (sopa de pescado) in La Hermandad de Pescadores, the emblematic restaurant is in the old Fishermen's Brotherhood building from 1361: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...e_Country.html

Much better itinerary for a July trip. You can make several day trips from San Sebastian. Although I could easily spend the whole month of July there you could also spend two of those nights in Santillana if you really want to experience a medieval town.

How to time your trip depends on your interests. If you agree that adding time to Barcelona makes sense (as I think it might), then one option would be to cut a night from Pamplona. Other options depend on your travel constraints, but could involve reversing the entire order of your trip (so Barcelona falls at the end), moving your arrival time up (so you reach Spain earlier), etc.

Because Hondarribia/Fuenterrabia is so close to San Sebastian / Donostia, you might want to stay in Santillana del Mar instead if you are looking to stay somewhere for a night or two -- at least that would take you into a different part of the north and give you different options for day trips. You can visit Hondarribia as a day trip from San Sebastian.
