Spain first-timer fears flight-attendant strike

I'm flying to Madrid on U.S. Airways in less than three weeks, and heard this week that the flight-attendant union that airline is poised to strike on March 25. Has anybody had this experience? What are my options?

We are in a similar dilemma, though not to Spain. It is my understanding, though you should double-check, that USAirways is offering full refunds or the option to re-book on another flight with no fee.

I'm in the same situation, flying to Italy on US Air (Hopefully) on March 28.
I called US Air and as Ilisa said, in case it happens they are offering all your money back or re-booking w/ no fee on another US Airways flight. HOWEVER, usually in this situation another airline will offer to "take on" passengers who are affected by the strike, and deliver them on their original dates. No other airline has offered to do this as of yet for US Air.

My concern is my non-refundable deposit at my hotel in Rome, as well as the deposit I made to a walking tour company. Is there any precedent for an airline company compensating this sort of thing??

Hopefully the strike will not happen.

Suzanne

I have been scanning for this topic -- US Air Strike -- on the US forum since those fights are more affected than international.

My impression is that US Air is planning to cancel all fights between 3/25 & 4/5 -- according to my travel agent it is "unpresidented" that an airline offer refunds ahead of time as US Air has been.

Check to see if you are flying from a "targeted" airport -- we were; in the words of my agent "No US Air is going in or out of *** on 3/25". Check also to see if your flight is originating in a targeted airport.

I just wish she had clued us in earlier; but we seem to have been luckly to rebook (for more, of course) with another line.

I would like to know from some of the experienced travelers on this forum what is reasonable to expect from one's agent, esp. one you have used frequently over several years.

I suspect that US Air will assume no responsibility for your hotel fees, etc.

I think that you will find the reason no other airline is offering to take US Air passengers is that everything that they are flying is full!(This is the main spring break week for the midwest schools.) I have heard on good authority that the strike is going throug -so if I were you I be prepared for any and all things?Good Luck! Debbie

When Northwest was on strike, other airlines would honor the tickets, but you could only make reservations after the strike had officially taken effect, and then only for flights in the next 24 hours. The same rules may be in effect here.

I'm caught in this too; group of seven flying 63 hours after the strike begins, and we are very concerned about the domestic conenctor flight, as much or more than the PHL-MUC flight. My travel agent (God bless her, and all "real" travel agents in their ever-dwindling careers!) reminds me that more often than not, strikes like this might well be resolved within that period of time. My best wishes to any Fodorites scheduled to fly USAir ON the 25th.

Thanks for the input. I called U.S. Airways this morning, and was told that I could a) get a full refund for the ticket(s); or b) reschedule another flight on U.S. Airways before March 25 or after April 9 without a penalty. The airline is not redirecting passengers to other airlines until the strike has been officially called. I'm hoping for the best.

I'd kinda like to keep this thread up near the top in this coming week, both to alert readers and to seek any additional info, if any has anything. I have received similar info about option to re-book on the 24th, but it's a moderately crummy choice in our situation (high school kids who can't necessarily dig deeper into their pockets to extend the trip an extra 3 days).

I have actually thought about "reproducing" the entire thread with the header <<USAir strike on all flights, March 25-April 5>>. I fear that the current header doesn't garner enoug
