I love all kind of chocolate but the 'leña vieja' (chocolate firewood) from 'Santa' and the typical Madridian chocolate bars called 'lenguas de gato' (cats' tongue) from 'La Mallorquina at Puerta del Sol take me back to my childhood.

I second csandoval's recommendation about the hole-in-the-wall place near the Picasso Museum in Barcelona! Their sign said Churreria Granja and they had a blue window frame.

ok. back from spain. tried many of the recommendations-- each one wonderful. our favorite, though, was the very unlikely picatoste in seville. thanks, Viajero2 ! the churros were amazing, the the chocolate great (slightly less thick than others, but a wonderful taste and texture.) as luck would have it, the place was just around the corner from the apartment we rented--- we went three times... each time sitting at the bar and watching them being made. would never have gone into the place without your advice... it looked somehow like a chain. but it's not... it was always full of locals and it just had a great vibe. amazing price, too.... i think it was 2.50E for choc&churros combo-- along with very friendly service. there may have been other churros that had a more complex flavor elsewhere... but we fell in love with this place-- and often burned our fingers as we could not wait to dig in!! (p.s. we lined up for churros at Chocolatería San Ginés and were disappointed that, though they were making them in the back, they were served stone cold!! they had a wonderful, corn-like flavor, but couldn't fully enjoy. chocolate was delicious) thanks again everyone for the wonderful advice!
