Spain and Italy-Help!

Husband and I are in early planning stage for Spring 2006. We have been to Rome and Tuscany. I would love to go back to Rome (and it's a must), but also want to go to the Amalfi Coast. Husband wants to see Spain. It really doesn't matter where in Spain-Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla- since we've never been, preferably sticking to only one city in Spain. We would love to spend about 3-4 days in Spain and the rest in Italy. We are also thinking 10-12 days total trip time. Is this possible to see Spain and Italy in 12 days. We can either arrive in Italy and leave Spain or vice versa. I've also been looking into flying/train from Spain to Italy.

Questions:
Is this possible? Need to add additional dates?
Where in Spain? We love wine, food, relaxing and walking around. Just getting a feel of the city.
Thanks in advance and hope to get some great advice!

You might consider taking a Fast ship from Italy to Spain: not what you would call a Mediterranean Cruise but should be relaxing. Sorry, I don't have URL's for the Company that operates them but you should be able to find it using a search engine.

The ferry will take you to Barcelona; but most of the fiestas in Spain in the Spring are in Andalucia. So Sevilla might be a better 'base' for that time of year.

With 3-4 days in Spain, you should probably limit yourselves to staying in one locale rather than trying to cover too much ground.

Not without a private jet. Plan 3 trips in advance and keep the geography tight.

We just spent 3 weeks in Italy/Spain and that wasn't nearly enough time, but we've been to both before and will go again. In 10-12 days, IMO I think you'll be rushing it, but having said that, I agree that Barcelona would probably make the most sense.

www.ryanair.com
www.vueling.com
www.easyjet.com
www.iberia.com all have inexpensive flights /spain/italy.

in spain i would go to sevilla area.( carmona/ jerez de la frontera). , or if you prefer big metropolitan cities, barcelona.

do an open jaw flight, taking a low cost airline over to rome from somewhere in spain o vice-versa.

remember luggage limits on the low cost are much less than your international flight.

i would not go too far .. just do as you have stated.. an area (am. cst), and a couple cities is plenty.

Here's my idea. Fly into Barcelona, spend 3 nights in the city, it is more then enough time to see the major sights and get a feel for Spain. From there, fly to Rome and take the train directly to Naples where you can then transfer to the city of your choice on the Amalfi Coast (I recommend Sorrento). Spend 4 nights, 5 days in the Amalfi Coast, enough time to see the cities on the Coast and relax. From there, take the train back to Rome and spend however much time you have left there.

It may be expensive to fly into one city and out of another city, so you can break up your trip in the middle by flying to Barcelona. If that's the case, I would fly to Rome, stay there for 3 nights, fly to Barcelona, stay for 3 nights, fly back to Rome and take the train to Naples. Then on your last day in the Amalfi Coast take the train back to Rome and leave either that day or the next day. That's an extra flight though, so do your best to fly into Barcelona and out of Rome.
