Arriving in Southhampton and want to spend a few days in Cork. What is the Best way to get there using public transportation.

The easiest solution is Aer Arann, which flies from Southampton to Cork, though at this time of the year flights aren't daily.

Otherwise the next nearest airport is Heathrow (accesible by bus from Southampton) from where Aer Lingus flies to Cork. There are hourly direct trains (140 mins) from Southampton to Birmingham airport for Aer Lingus or bmi baby flights, or a slightly messier, one-change, 2 hour train (deps every 15 mins or so) to Gatwick for Ryanair flights.

Which of these is cheapest or most convenient for you depends on when you're flying.

There was a boat service Southhampton-Cherbourg-Cork, but it was discontinued when the Titanic sank.

Transatlantic liners from Southampton continued calling at Cobh near Cork until the 1960s (and the QE2 carried on making occasional calls at Cobh). It's still possible by sea via France but otherwise the surface journey requires a train journey to south Wales for a ferry to Ireland.
