Phil,
try http://www.charmerelax.com
The hotels belonging to this group are individually owned and operated and the one I 've stayed at in Ravello was very good --although not "exactly cheap".

Enjoy your trip,
Pier-Mauro Mazzadi, Florence, Italy
p.s.: if you go to Reggio Calabria do not miss the local Museo Archeologico which houses what many art historians maintain to be the 2 finest bronze statues from the classical Greek period.
They are called "Bonzi di Riace" and are housed in a special earthquake proof chamber in the basement of the Museum.

When you say "towns" do you mean you're going to some small towns? If so, it might be best to write to the little towns and ask if there are any hotels. You can also try looking for agriturismo places if that sounds appealing (or if there are no hotels in the towns you plan to visit). There are websites for certain regions that can be a source of info on hotels. You can also find hotels in small towns by doing a search on www.google.com with the name of the town plus the word "albergo" or "hotel" or "pensione".
