My husband and I are going to be in Italy in August (sister is getting married in my parents’ home town). We decided we would make a laid back vacation of it. We decided Cinque Terre for a few days might just fit the bill.

My questions are:
What is the best way to search for information on Cinque Terre on this forum. I typed Cinque Terre on the search forum and got some information but I want to make sure there aren't any abbreviations that may be used instead to give me even more information.

Also besides this website http://www.cinqueterre.it/en/index.asp; is there any other website that contain all Cinque Terre information on it and are there any book guides geared to just this area?

Your help on this is much appreciated and hopefully this isn't too much of a repeat question.

Nutella, also remember that the Cinque Terre has become a very popular tourist destination for lots of people. In August it will no doubt be crowded. Not to say that it won't be enjoyable for you, but be aware that the sleepy little villages are very alive with tourists of all flavors.

We were in Cinque Terre a couple of weeks ago. I was worried it would be overly crowded and hot, but it wasn't. The exception was Vernazza - that was a zoo, even after sundown.

I also expected it to be crawling with Americans clutching Rick Steves books, but I'd say it was 80% or more Italians on vacation.

CT has more tourists because of Rick Steves. Check out his forum. You will find anything you want to know. You can also either buy his latest Italy book or buy a recent used one on Amazon, etc. He lists a lot of the hotels and info about each one, along with restaurants, things to do, a little history, etc.

Our favorite outing was buying an all day boat pass for 12 Euros and going to 4 of the 5 towns (Corniglia is too high off the coast and doesn't have a port). It was just beautiful seeing each colorful village hugging the cliffs.

As already suggested, lots of people shorten it to CT so try searching on that. Also try individual searches on the towns - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. Levanto is talked about a bit too, it's not officially part of the Cinque Terre but it's the next town north on the train line. Also look at info on La Spezia - not to stay but it's the biggest close town and people ask questions about it.

When visiting Cinque Terre in the milder months, it's best to plan to be there during the week rather than on the week end. It can be quite crowded, especially on a week end or holiday, such as Liberation Day, April 25, or May Day, May 1.

Make sure you choose accommodations that have air conditioning.

Cinque Terre is a wonderfully relaxed area on the Ligurian Coast, the Italian Riviera. From what you said in your post it will work if you like hiking and boating. Here's a nice video introduction to the area:

Thank you for all the help, especially the tips on how to search for Cinque Terre information on this forum and elsewhere.

We are looking for a more relaxed vacation of lounging, enjoying the sites and hiking. My husband really wants to go fishing so hopefully this will be a good place to do that. We had expected it to be crowded, but we can always work around the trip that we are there at least during the week to avoid the weekend vacationers.

Although Portovenere is not part of 5T, it's wonderfully charming and do include it as part of your itinerary.

The ferry boat that runs between the Cinque Terre towns (fyi, only 4 of the 5 CT towns have a port; town of Corniglia does NOT have water access) .... anyways, the same boat that travels in the 5T also goes to Portovenere >>> check schedules & info at
