Sorrento's Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria

I've seen numerous inquiries and recommendations for hotels on the Amalfi coast but I have not seen any for this hotel in Sorrento. As I'm planning for Sorrento to be my logistics base for the coast (it seems to be a great transportation hub), I'm actually suprised I don't read more about Sorrento. Does anyone have feedback on this particular hotel? Thank you for any input.

We stayed at the Excelsior Vittoria about three years ago as part of a package holiday arranged from UK. I only mention this as it is avery expensive hotel if you book it on an individual bais. That said we really enjoyed our stay. The hotel has a private drive from the piazzo tasso which is in the centre of town. So it is well situated. It has rooms with great views overlooking the harbour and the dining room is lovely to look at and also has views over the water. One useful feature is the lift which goes directly down to the ferry area. it is a bonus not to have to walk down and then back up or to catch the bus. the rooms vary in price and size. We had room 107 which was very large with a terrace bigger than the room. They have a guests book which i read avidly. i wrote down that people loved rooms: 107,122, and 223. I can only speak for 107!.
We stayed for two weeks and while we were there the hotel had about three large groups there which made the lounges sometimes a bit crowded. We did enjoy the atmosphere of this hotel and were pleased to have stayed there. We have also stayed at the Tramontano which has rooms with great views. It caters to a lot of British groups and the food is not as good as at the Grand Excelsior. I have heard that the Bellevue Syrene is a good hotel. I checked it out while I was there and it looked very tasteful. It also is built along the cliff and has good views. I understand it gets booked out quite often. I would be pleased to answer any other questions to the best of my ability. we were there in March 1999. we go at that time because prices rise to summer rates in April.

Thank you Anniel for your response. Did you get the impression that the hotel books large groups regularly? Is there anyone else that has experience at this hotel?

DJ, I'm not sure if you're still looking for information on this hotel, but my husband and I had a 3 day stay there in November, 2000 for our honeymoon and it is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend it. It's a bit pricey, but very "grand" as the name states. Some of the things that made it so unique is the private drive - it's lined with lemon trees and the grounds are pretty as well. Feels secluded. We were hoping for a room that directly overlooked the water, but ended up with a room along the side so you could see the ocean, but it didn't directly face the water. That was the only disappointment. Very nice hotel. Didn't know if you were still looking for responses on this, but if you haven't gone yet and you do stay there, enjoy! (How do you say that in Italian? Wish I knew!) Have fun.

Jerri,
The answer to your question (how do you say "Enjoy!" in Italian) is:

Divertati!

Ciao!

My family (5 of us) stayed in this hotel 2 years ago and LOVED it! It was the perfect place to see all of the amalfi coast, just down the lift and you can boat to capri and napoli. the concierge can assist you in taking a tour of the ruins-cannot miss pompeii and we drove to see positano, etc. we loved the town of sorrento more than everywhere else and thought the hotel was lovely and beautiful. we spent some time at the pool with a nice international crowd and quite honestly the price was good for our family in a suite with a loft, including daily breakfast and patio. ciao.

Jerri,

Thank you for your follow-up. We did end up staying hear last September 2001. What a hotel. We had an ocean view and our room looked out onto Mt. Vesuvious. Our HUGE room & Huge balcony were incredible. I would stay hear in a heartbeat again. In comparison to our hotel in Rome & Venice at $200 a night, this hotel at approx $250 a night was well worth it. The breakfast each morning was lavish. The hotel was just a work of art with frescoe everywhere; and the history behind the hotel itself relative to the prior guest list is remarkable. I very much enjoyed Sorrento and only wish we had been able to spend more time in the southern part of Italy.
