Sorrento vs. Naples

We are finally coming close to finishing our Italy Itinerary for July. A requirement for both me and my husband is to spend some time on a beach towards the end of our trip.

After research it seems the Amalfi coast is the place to go. I was originally looking into staying in a small town right in the heart of things like Positano, however, the costs of hotels per night here are out of our budget (which we are trying to keep below $200 per night).

It seems like another option would be to stay in either Naples or Sorrento which could offer day trips Amalfi - this may even offer variety to going to several different beaches over a couple of days.

What is your opinion?

If you want to go to beaches, don't stay in Naples. Sorrento is a much better option.

I wouldn't give up on finding lodgings on the Amafli coast within your budget provided you are willing to stay in B&Bs and go to a less famous town, some even a bit south of what is considered the Amalfi proper.

Do some google searches for "bed breakfast" plus the names of towns like, Atrani, Minori, Cetera and Vietri sul Mare, and Praiano. If you stay close to Salerno, you will find ferries there to take you to Capri and Positano. You can also do the same searches using the word "agriturismo."

Were I to stay in Sorrento, I would pick an agriturismo in the hills of Sorrento. You can find pretty ones with Google searches, and some even serve dinner. (You should also search for agriturismi around Minori and Salerno. Some are very close to the coast I believe.

Also, if you would like to stay in Ravello, the restaurant Da Salvatore rents pretty rooms with small private balconies and amazing views. They are 90e per night. Ravello is high above the beaches, however, and you must take a bus or be willing to climb.

I don't know if the summer rates on these places are still within your budget, but you might want to find out:

I forgot to add you should look in Maiori. Some people actually prefer towns far less touristed than the famous tourist hotspots.

these links are so helpful! thank you. I think most important to us during this leg of the trip is to have access to a beach or beaches where we can spend our days with some choice of restaurants and moderate nightlife (if we are up for it). Thanks again!
