sorrento to venice

sorrento to venice
Hi we are a family of four planing to hire a car in rome and drive to sorrento then on to venice. Is this a good idea or does anyone have a better suggestion ,train or plane maybe. How long would it take to drive from sorrento to venice and is it a scenic trip?

I can help you out a little bit here. The last time we did this route via train was in the year 2000.
We left Sorrento on the local Circumvesuviana train at 8:00 a.m.,and arrived arrived in Naples Centrale Station. Then we boarded the Eurostar train in Naples at 9:30 a.m., and arrived in Florence at 1:30 p.m.
We stayed two days in Florence, therefore, this trip wasn't directly into Venice.
On the day we departed Florence we took the Eurostar at 12:42 p.m., and arrived in Venice (Santa Lucia Station) at 3:33 p.m.
It's kind of late right now (10:30 p.m.), so I'll leave you to do the math.

For a good trip description with distances and times and a map you can blow up, input your departure and destination in
www.viamichelin.com or in the similar www.mappy.com.
Read carefully about family tickets and family discounts on www.trenitalia.it - it goes by numbers of people in the family, by ages - snoop around, it will be worth your while.
For fares, input your trip but use dates no more than 60 days ahead then click on the shopping cart. (Never mind if you actually fly later - fares don't change, hardly ever, until December when the new schedule comes out.)
Also look at www.railsaver.com, input the segment and see what fare it brings up (click the "only if it saves me money" option on the second screen).
Until about March 26, www.alpieagles.it flies Naples-Venice, can be very cheap but - like all the other budget airlines - if varies by how far ahead you book and other parameters.
After they terminate that route, you could still fly to Verona - check at www.skyscanner.net if this is at all of interest.

As noted, check prices at www.trenitalia.com.
The "offerta famiglia" is the cheapest for two adults and 1 child. The other child rides at "youth fare".
It's about 200E to do the whole trip by train, 2cl on the ES*.
You could have a driver collect/return you at the Naples station - about 200E additional.
A compact car for 4 days will be about 250E+ parking fees.

Train Naples/Venice is about 7hr.
Driving Sorrento/Venice is about 8hr.
As noted, check prices at www.trenitalia.com.

Hi jamesbond. One time after visiting Sorrento and south we drove to Bari (across Italy) stayed overnight in Bari, had a fantastic fish dinner on the beach north of Bari (took the taxi to the restaurant) and than drove north along the Adriatic Sea to Venice. Stayed at Pescara one night and Ravenna two nights during the road trip also. But we had a long time in Italy..do not know how long you will be in Italy so you may not have time for a road trip like this.

It's essentialy a full days drive (7 to 8 hours on the road plus the usual lunch and potty stops) from Sorrento to Venice. And you don;t mention how old your kids are - will being able to move around more on the trains be an advantage - or a problem keeping track of them?
Driving makes more sense if
1) you're going to stop along the way and see/do some things
2) the train is too complicated or expensive
My personal preference is always for driving - since that way you have control - and aren;t stuck by delays, strikes etc - or dragging kids and luggage through train stations, changing trains and tracks etc. But we both like driving in europe - that's part of the fun of our trips.
If you have no particular preference I would go with whichever will make life easier on you/your kids.
