Best way to go from Sorrento to Venice
Hi-
I am trying to figure out the best way to travel from Sorrento to Venice in September. I am not opposed to air travel, buses, or trains.
Any advice is much appreciated--I do not want to rent a car though.
Thanks so much!

We took the train from Sorrento to Naples, then switched to the train to Venice. It's easy once you figure out in Naples which train to get on. I think it made a couple of stops but we did not have to get off until we got to Venice.

The simplest route is to take the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Naples (1 hour). It arrives on the lower level of the Napoli Centrale station. Go to the upper level and buy tickets for Napoli-Venezia Santa Lucia. A direct IC train all the way takes 8 1/2 hours. The fastest route (5 1/2 hours) requires taking a high-speed EuroStar Italia train to Rome and connecting there to another one to Venice.
There is also a direct Naples-Venice night train. It leaves Naples at 19:57 and arrives in Venice at 05:56.

Thanks for all of your advice. I think we are going to take the direct overnight train from Naples to Venice since it will save us one night of hotel.
I have no idea why--but I have such a hard time figuring out the train schedules!

ros3sca,
Night trains often sell out weeks in advance. If you are from the USA, be aware that Trenitalia (Italian national rail) doesn't accept US credit cards for online booking. Neither raileurope.com nor italiarail.com sells tickets for domestic night trains in Italy. You can book this train in advance by phoning the German Rail call center. Dial your country's international access code (011 for the USA and Canada) + 44 (country code for Germany) + 8718 80 80 66.
