SORRENTO TO TAORMINA
We are planning a trip which includes getting from Sorrento to Taormina. Seems that everyone (including the rail people) recommend flying into Catania, but that still leaves us an hour away from Taormina. Is there a train station in Taormina? Does anyone have advice?

Yes, there's a train station, You can take a bus or an overpriced taxi up to the town from the train station. To get a taxi from the bus station to your hotel you'll need to make a phone call, so if you don't have a cell phone you'd do better to take the taxi from the train station.
Actually, if you fly into Catania you'd probably do better to take a bus to Taormina. I took the train from Sorrento to Siracusa - beyond Taormina (see http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...-sicily.cfm?62 )

Hi Dee - Another ferry option is Salerno-Messina (- operator: Caronte):

From Messina it's an hour by train to Taormina.
Hope this helps ...
