Hi, I will be visiting Italy for the first time in October plus returning to Malta. What is the best option to get to Sicily from Sorrento by public transport? We haven't yet booked accommodaiton in Sicily (or Sorrento) and am thinking of either Palermo, Catania (where we will fly out of to Malta) or Taormina. So, options to any of these cities would be helpful. I think we may need to go to Salerno to get a train?? Thanks!

There are overnight ferries from Naples arriving early the following morning. See http://www.cemar.it/dest/ferries_sicily.htm as there is more than one company doing the route. I don't know how expensive they are as passenger only, But in terms of journey time, the Train is only a couple of hours quicker.

You could also fly from naples to palermo or Catania;
