I know there is a ferry from Naples to Palermo because I have taken it...overnight in my case. You can also take the train and I am sure Amalfi Coast Transport Guru Steve James will know the details!

Do a search for the poster GAC. THere are several threads that may give you ideas about trains and ferries.
I took the night ferry out of Naples also, but I think there may be a train solution, and I think GAC has given great detailed information about the subject.

You can get a budget flight from Naples to Catania (closer to Taormina than Palermo) on AlpiEagles. To get to the Naples airport from Sorrento, there is a shuttle bus - Curreri Viaggi (6E).
www.whichbudget.com for flights and www.curreriviaggi.it for the shuttle.

Hi Lulu - Options by sea include:

Naples-Catania (TTT Lines)

Naples-Milazzo (Snav, Siremar, Ustica Lines) via Lipari etc.

Salerno-Messina (Caronte)

Otherwise you can go by train from Naples or Salerno. See:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hey Eks - I've been called many things ... but never a guru

The most efficient option is to train between Sorrento and Taormina (you must take the Circumvesuviana commuter rail to Naples, then Trenitalia).

The sea option (Naples to Catania) is well worth considering if you plan to travel overnight.

Air is fast, but you must add commute time to reach the Naples airport (1 hour), then backtrack by bus to Taormina from the Catania airport (75 minutes).

All-in-all, I would take the train, particularly if you book in advance ("Amica Fare&quot and get a 20% discount.

We took the train in the opposite direction, from Taormina (the stationis actually in Giardini Naxos) to Sorrento, via Naples, last May. While it was a somewhat long train ride, about six hours, it was quite pleasant and I enjoyed the scenery. And I loved crossing the Strait of Messina, from the mainland to Sicily, on the train ferry - it was very cool!

Depending what time of year you are going, I think you could also take a ferry from Sorrento to Salerno and then train from there to Taormina.
