Yes, there are ferries from Sorrento to Positano.
It may be faster but taking the ferry is much nicer. Beautiful views along the way and the approach into Positano by boat is magical.
Also, the drive from Sorrento to Positano, while beautiful itself, is full of hair-pin turns. If anyone in your group gets the least bit motionsick, they will not be feeling well once you get there unless they take medicine beforehand. However, traveling by ferry, the wind is cool and blowing in your face. I get motionsick but traveling by boat in that area didn't give me any problems.

If I remember correctly, there are not a lot of ferries going to Positano - maybe three or four a day. You'll probably need to head down to the docks early and plan on spending the day on this excursion. It's not a short trip (1 1/2 hours maybe?). We did the reverse trip last summer (P to S for the day) so I can't remember the exact times). It's a great trip!
