Sorrento for a week????

3 females heading to Italy for 2 weeks in july. We are wondering if a week in sorrento is too long. We want to be able to take day trips into positano, capri, pompeii andf see amalfi coast. Are these daytrips possible and if so how hard is it to get to these places from Sorrento. We are not sure if Sorrento is a good base.

Sorrento is the best base:
40 minutes by bus to Positano (20 by scooter),
30 minutes by circumvesuviana train to Pompei,
20 minutes by hydrofoil to Capri

...plus bars, restaurants, and small tiny beaches...what do you want more? ;-)

A week might be too short for 3 girls (females?!?) in Sorrento in July!

My husband and I had 6 nights in Sorrento and found heaps to do. We visited Positano by bus one day and Amalfi and Ravello by bus a different day. The bus ride is along a winding cliff top road with great views but sometimes you might end up standing, especially going back to Sorrento. You catch the bus outside the train station in Sorrento, buy your ticket at the station and don't forget to validate in the yellow box on the bus (this date/time stamps the ticket). It might pay to ask the driver to let you know when you reach Positano as the stop is not marked and we missed it and ended up in the next town, which was lovely by the way. We bought another ticket and caught the next bus back.

We walked down to the port (bit of a hike, there is a bus) and caught the ferry to Capri for the day, lots of shops, walks, etc. Very busy with tourists. You can do the trip to the Blue Grotto at Capri if you want.

You can catch the train from Sorrento to Pompeii, from memory only a few stops away. Then there is lots to see in Sorrento itself, we loved wandering around the back streets of the old town. There are wonderful views from the Foreigners Club (open to anyone and with free toilets - not to be sneezed at in Italy!!) where you can get a meal or a drink.
Have a great time.

Hi
We spent a week in Sorrento(2 females) two years ago and it was one of our favorite trips to Italy. It's a great base for seeing the area. We used the buses to day trip and found them MUCH easier than attempting the drive. Very easy to see everything and get back to Sorrento for a great dinner! We loved positano, amalfi, ravello, and capri! We found Sorrento very pleasant with many dining options, shops, etc! Have a wonderful time!

Sorrento is one of the most beautiful places! You will have a blast. You can do day trips to Pompeii etc as the others suggested, and Sorrento is just a wonderful place to stroll in the evening and relax and really soak in Italy. Buon viaggio!

We did a similar trip to Sorrento a while back with day trips to Capri, Amalfi, Possitano, Herculanium, Pompei, and Naples. Great time, great day trips and Sorrento was a great base. Easy to get to all of the daytrips mentioned above.
