spaarne i mean do you carry a bigger backpack full of your stuff and a small day pack for traveling around during the day when your bigger bag is locked away in a locker?</i>
Sort of, yes. I use a roller bag. Backpacks are old school. And I carry a small day bag. Never keep any valuables in your day bag. It can be picked in an instant.

I see someone above mentioning Sta travel which is great but you DO technically have to be a student and under 26; it's been awhile since I got my STA ID lol. You ask about hostels and in Amsterdam I definitely recommend the Bulldog hotel (also a hostel) in the Red Light District. In the winter prices are 25 euros/night or so, in high season more like 33. Not too much difference. It's safe, a nice meeting place, very central, good breakfast spread which I often make sandwiches from that I snack on throughout the day, great staff, and they clean the hell out of the dorms so I've never seen a bug or woken with a bite. I love them and send all my visiting friends there. There's a 24 hr gym maybe a 15 min walk away too, probably more than 1 gym now that I think about it but the 24 hr one sticks out in my mind; I just have no clue how much day passes cost though. Seems like it would be better to just walk everywhere, go for a jog, or maybe rent a bike to see the city? I agree with a lot of the info others have posted so no point repeating it here
