Okay, but what was her message *supposed* to follow?

I mean, very few of these messages follow, at least in my fuzzy brain.

As a self-appointed expert, I feel compelled to correct the spelling. It is "eroscillator"

Anyway Suze, I think the picture is going to be perfect

AnnieP,
I like the way you describe IT!

By the way, what happened to that thread. I haven't been able to find it. Is it gone forever?

...and tedgale, you are always the gentleman, this time for not pointing out my typo on 'sequitur'

"women who tend to hang around with mostly gay men tend also to be rather theatrical, with gaudy clothing and makeup..."
...and they have excellent taste!

Nothing like proclaiming another stereotype. Your experience is indeed limited.

Why would anyone think mariam is a troll? Sounds to me like she's just what she says she is; a 55 year old woman on her way to Europe for the first time with a new beau. Now she is rediscovering her sexual identity.

Mariam, seriously. Do not go outside in a caftan unless, of course, you are planning to set up a table and read Tarot cards.

Oh, and I'm sorry, I forgot to give thanks to tedgale, for the Latin. Although it hasn't been 40 years for me, it might as well be.

tedga;e. I forgot to thank you for "irruption", it's a new word for me, and I love that it's neither interruption or eruption.

aaagh... took me awhile to read this, but I did laugh out loud a few times.

Sadly, I've been identifying myself as "middle aged" for a good ten years now, and I'm 55. When did I pass out of middle age, and what am I now?

gaudy: stylishly meretricious?

Elaine, since I already told you my experience with "fag hags" was limited, thank you for telling me that my experience is . . . limited.

However, you bring up another stereotype, do you not--that anyone remotely connected to gay men have "excellent taste"?

tuscanlifedit..."new" age?

I find all of this Hag talk a wee bit rude.

" limited "fag hag" experience,"

then it is best to not go on any more about something that one has limited experience in..lest you become offensive.

" women who tend to hang around with mostly gay men tend also to be rather theatrical, with gaudy clothing and makeup. At least, it was thus in college and in NYC. "

Having lived in NYC for over 30 years and having been friends with and worked with many gay men, I find this remark , even from someone with limited knowledge of what she is talking about - insulting .

"Since then, I've not had much contact with that world--not by decision but due to geography. Either most gay men in middle Georgia are still closeted or there aren't any..."

And having some sort of Gay Radar, you would know this to be a fact?

Yes. I have Gay Radar.

No, I should think that you would realize that a very small Southern town is not the most hospitable place for men or women to be openly gay.

I don't know, I was going to say something about the "gaudy and theatrical" bit too, but then I realized that I have advocated wearing ballroom dance shoes as a comfortable alternative to heels. In the daytime! And then I went and mocked Town & Country.

So in my case, perhaps guilty as charged. Sigh.

And regarding Mariam's rediscovery of her sexual identity: the caftan-wearing Venetians could actually be a part of some Moonie-type sex cult, no?

I don't think that on a travel forum whether I'm straight or gay, Jewish or Catholic, Democratic or (gasp! ) Republican should matter but if you must know, I'm a Druid.

It's gaydar, not "gay radar". And by definition, only homosexuals can possess it.

I didn't know that only homosexuals could possess gaydar. I am learning a lot tonight: I am not middle aged, not matter what I think, and my so called gaydar is something else. And I thought I had great gaydar. ;-(

Returning to an earlier point (though still not the OP's one), the question of middle age is a particular bugaboo of mine. Middle age is a range, rather than a very specific point. Many people consider the range to be either age 40-60 (following Erik Erikson, I suppose), or 35-60 (I agree with the latter).

People easily grasp that youth is a range of ages in a lifespan; why is it hard to see middle age similarly? Why take it as calling oneself at the exact midpoint of life?

BTW, tedgale, I think your Latin is flawless and impressive, though my own Latin is too far gone for that to be a valuable endorsement.

I am sorry tuscanlifeedit. I know it has been a hard day for you. Please sit down and grab a glass of wine. You can think about it tomorrow.
