Snow in London, really? Egads.

Even if the Tesco lorry gets up, it doesn't mean it will get back down LOL! >>
yes it's not so much the getting up as the going down that causes the problems.
I've been really naughty so I'm being sent to Bodmin tomorrow - whether I'll get back again is another matter entirely.
and DD's being sent to Coventry is on [almost] permanent hold - she's not been naughty enough.

Maybe I was exagerating a little, but in my workplace we have a selection of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims (as well as Christians, Jews, Agnostics, Atheist and a Wiccan). We have (in terms of origin) Indians, Pakistanis, Poles, Spaniards, South Afrikans, Tanzanians, Hong Kong Chinese, Kenyans, Nigerians, Scots, Welsh,Irish, Americans and Slovenians and English.
In the 15 years I have worked here, I am only aware of only two issues where race or religion were an issue. One of these was a non Christian who having been given time off to celebrate their own religious festival, then objected to being rota'd onto Christmas and claimed that this was "racist".
The point I was trying to put across was that in my opinion as a British, white, middle aged, male we do not have any issues with diversity (I know there is a risk that we may have but from my cosseted position I don't see it). We are colleagues, and I have to think hard as to who is foreign, who is what religion. The diversity awareness seems to accentuate the differences to the point where it may cause problems.

I agree. It does feel rather old fashioned. I'm happy to accept that some professiopns (esp mine) do need to be reminded that Driving While Black etc isn't actually a crime. The idea that the country is crawling with unwitting racists is not the case.
Yes there are racists, but they know they are, and are hardly likely to be in something like Social Services in the first place.
Now if people want to talk about yer effniks and homophobia.......That's a VERY different story.

Back to snow- what a week we've had.
We now have almost 2 feet where it's undisturbed. there was a bit of a thaw this afternoon, but that just means the roads'll be like skating rinks tomorrow. The hairdresser's car is being sent back to the hairdresser when I can get it out my road end. That will not be any time soon.

I did smile when I noticed that about the only football match going ahaead in the whole UK was in Aberdeen today.
They are obviously made of strong stuff up there (or whisky is a better proof against the cold than I thought).

great thread! I'm currently planning a trip in 3 months, so went surfing for info and found this. Love the humor - it's freezing here and I could use the guffaws! Getting me more in the mood for this trip!
I live in Virginia, and share the thoughts expressed about too little snow removal equipment for the infrequent heavy snows - but those of us who can indeed slow down, stay home and cook, and just enjoy the rare appearance of this weather are lucky!!
My college-aged daughter has a friend who couldn't get to London to start her study abroad this past Tuesday due to the weather - I trust she's gotten there by now!
Stay warm, eveyone, and keep the jokes flowing!

You can't get winter tyres in Britain for love not money. The country has run out of grit- we're now stealing it off the Germans or using cat litter, apparently. But I have wonderful neighbours who have ploughed the road almost daily, the Whites pushed me out of a snowdrift where the car had been all day, on Friday night, and another neighbour has taken his digger to the barricade the Council built with their snow ploughs.
David, Pittodrie has an electric blanket. So does Ibrox- I guess Rangers must have been meant to have been away.

Treated the MX5 to 4 new tyres which have not helped in the slightest. Wretched thing seems determined to go sideways only through the snow, ice and slush in our road so has been left parked on the road as I can't get it the 15' back on to the drive. I'm actually quite glad it is off the drive as there are great big lumps of ice hanging precariously from the electricity cable directly over the bonnet which wouldn't do it any favours at all if they fall.

All SPL clubs are required to have undersoil heating....some games have been probably called off if the surrounding area, paths car parks etc. are deemed unsafe for fans.

You can get snow chains here (inc plastic and rubber ones) and something called Snobootz, which are legal in the UK, as long as you take them off once you get to snow-free areas of road. They apparently make a really big difference to traction, and I have been quite tempted.
However, I'm not sure how practical all the faffing about putting them on and off as you go from side roads to motorway and back to side roads again, really is. A guy at work told me he leaves his on all the time (including a drive from Cambridge to Scotland over xmas) and no-one has noticed yet....
